Marikina B.I.O. highlights

Marikina B.I.O Expo entrance gate

It was a bit overcast weather last September 21, 2010 when the former Marikina Mayor Ms. Maria Lourdes Carlos ” Marides” – Fernando (term of office -2001 to 2010)  was one of the guests of honor during the opening of the Marikina B.I.O. exposition 2010.

Ms. Marides Fernando touring the exhibit together with the author

This event is said to be the first of its kind to be held in Marikina Riverbanks E-Com Building which promotes the place as an event venue which cater to the plant and animal hobbyists specifically those who like snakes , reptiles ,tarantulas.

There is also a butterfly house which was made by the DCEM team and Mr. Allen Mayor they dubbed the butterfly and small garden as ” Garden A Flutter ” . There were at least over 100 live butterflies that were captive bred and then released them in an garden setting complete with the food plants which are needed by the butterflies in order to survive the concrete jungle of the mall.

A portion of the Marikina  ECOM – Hall was literary transformed from ordinary  semi-indoor plants and draped looking passageways , into a garden oasis paradise with creative background lighting effects and colorful landscaped mini-gardens  complete with garden sets .

There is  an orchid landscaped  garden with several varieties of white Dendrobium hybrids , Oncidium hybrids . Orchid plants were some of the most favorite plants among Marikina gardeners , according to one of the visitor  to the expo .  They tend to grow better in the riverside areas and several subdivisions which dotted the entire Marikina .

According to one of the visitors , She always maintained a small garden complete with different varieties of Dendrobium  orchids.

Another landscaped exhibit was done by the  team of Mr. Delmer Rivera, Mr. Otto Marino  and Mr. Lawrence Chan which proudly displayed almost 30  species and hybrids of the Bromeliad family.

Bromeliad Landscape Exhibit

The  colorful landscape exhibit was complemented with a live display of  an iguana ( official mascot of the expo) . This tamed iguana named ” Hector” was an instant crowd drawer of the event. Some of the people though that iguanas are a carnivorous bunch of reptile species similar to Godzilla.

Japanese themed garden landscape

While a  Japanese inspired garden set -up,  complete with bamboo accent  , pagoda garden lamp , various sansieviera plants  ,  mini koi pond with white and colored pebbles accented the whole zen style of minimalist garden.

But kidding aside , Hector became an official goodwill ambassador of the expo much to the delight of the crowd , mostly public school students, Philippine Science Centrum staffs, Marikina Riverbank Mall administration, tenants and some VIPs.

Media partners like Buy and Sell , People’s Tonight , Sonshine Television channel 39 , NBN channel 4 ” She Ka” , DZEC Angel Radio went their way to cover the grand event.

This was probably one of the biggest reptilian  and  plant show  within the  Marikina Riverbanks E-COM Building  in years.  The mall  used to be a venue place of pet and animal shows several years ago until another Filipino – theme style tiangge mall opened in Pasig  which drove most of the animal and pet  shows permanently into Pasig.

Another exhibit from Pangasinan is Ms. Juana Pinkian which exhibited various handcrafted furniture made from old scrap wood . One of her first buyers during the expo is the former mayor.

Ms. Pinkian is a regular “suki” exhibitor in various garden and mall shows. Her down to earth attitude  makes her a good example of woman entrepreneur. Whatever hardships she may encounter  during trade shows, she never gives-up hope .

Other notable exhibitors includes Planet Earth- Australia which sells some of their famous t-shirt line , RK designs , Velasco Trading Company, Reptiles Amphibians and Pet Center , Ms. Juana Pinkian Furniture , Smart Communications , RNK Ornamental Plants and Landscaping , Cats Central  , Vita Herbs and advocacy groups  like World Vision , Green Philippines  and DECM the event management firm.

The aim of the Marikina B.I.O. expo is not just to showcase rare pet and wildlife but also to educate the public to take care of the environment  and the urgent need to fight climate change .
