Warner Brother Trade Show highlights

Grand Ballroom C, D and E  , Crowne Plaza Galleria Hotel, Ortigas , Quezon City -Philippines.

It was a cloudy afternoon with sporadic rainfall on July 31, 2012 when the author arrived at around past 2:00 pm at  the trade show organized by Warner Brother Consumer Products ( WBCP) , Pacific Licensing Studio (PLS ) and MCT Event Management.

WBCP highlighted its current portfolio  led by Man of Steel ( Philippine release :  June 2013) and the two other films based on The Hobbit , The Hobbit : An Expected Journey (Philippine release:  December 2012 ) .

 Animated properties featuring Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo , Tom and Jerry and the Thunder Cats , along with many DC Comics favorite characters . Also featured are such classic properties as The Wizard of OZ and the television series , including Gossip Girl and The Big Bang Theory .

Tweety  merchandise items ranging from children’s dress, bags , school supplies and stuffed toys.

The whole ballroom was filled with wide array of consumer products ranging  from children’s t-shirts, stuffed toys, mouse pad, toys , shampoo , lotions, school supplies, pencils , erasers , tooth brushes , phone cards, yogurt , chocolate milk ,  credit cards ( from Indonesia ), tumblers, stickers , car freshener , USB , helmet  and other items,  some of which are highly collectible .

In the late 1990’s Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT ) had license agreement with Pacific Licensing  Company that released several phone cards with  Warner Brother cartoon characters in the local market , some of the PLDT phone cards are now regarded as collectible items.

Ms. Carol Tan was instrumental with forging a  key strategic financial partner in 2003 , PT Bank Central Asia Tbk Indonesia to launch a co-branded BCA/Mastercard credit card featuring the classic Looney Tunes, which was the first of its kind in South East Asia.

The original series started in a comic strip in 1984 and due to the success. It was launch by Pacific Animation Corporation. The first season was aired in  1985 with 65 episodes , followed by a television movie entitled Thunder Cats- HO ! in 1986.  While season 2, 3 and 4 followed a different format with twenty episode per season. Starting with five- part story . The original series was distributed by Rankin-Bass Corporation then parent company of Telepictures Corporation which later merged with Lorimar Productions in 1986.

 In 1989 Lorimar- Telepictures , then folded and was purchased by Warner Brothers  hence forth had acquired the rights to air and market the series.

There is almost every item that is suitable from babies (several months old-to 1 year -old) ,  toddlers  ( 2 to 5 years -old) , children ( 6 to 9 years-old ) , teenagers ( 10 to 14 years-old )  young adults ( 15 to 17 years-old )  to adults .

There are a whole lot of items manufactured from different parts of Asia like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Singapore , China, Vietnam and  from the Philippines.

In fact, according to one of Pacific Licensing executive, The Philippines ranks third in Southeast Asia ( in terms of  product license ), after Indonesia and Thailand . This is mainly to majority of the Filipinos who grew -up watching Warner Brothers , DC  and its long history of  pop- culture .

A Question and Answer portion serves as an ice breaker for those participants present.  The emcee tried another trivia question   ” Who was the actor who played in the the 1966 to 1968 television series  Batman ?” .  I confidently answered  ” Mr. Adam West”  He then  asked me if i was already born back then ? Hehehe , I told the crowd that i used to watch the re-runs in cable television station.

Then, a video program was presented to the participants and upcoming movie releases , television shows and merchandise items for  sale or for licensing . I have met some retail mall executives,  industry players ,  fellow bloggers and newspaper editors.

Three Philippine companies were awarded by Pacific Licensing Company during the event.

I also met my cousin and several friends during the trade show. I was not aware that my cousin had been franchising Warner Brother characters , DC characters thru Pacific Licensing and have been supplying school bags  in some malls .

The participants were treated to a hearty late afternoon canape  catered by the Crowne Plaza Galleria staffs .

Universal Postal Union letter writing contest for 2013

PHLPost launches Int’l letter writing contest

 The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) invites students 15-years old and below to join the 42nd Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition for Young People.  The winning piece will be sent by PHLPost as the Philippines’ official entry in the worldwide letter writing competition to be held in Berne, Switzerland.

The contest is a yearly event organized by PhilPost under the auspices of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which is composed of 191 countries around the world of which the Philippines is an active member.

The 2013 competition asks young people to write a letter to someone to tell them “why water is precious”. The theme coincides with the International Decade for Action “Water for Life” 2005–2015.

The compositions must be recent and original letters written in English according to the theme of the competition. It must not exceed the limit of 800 words in length in the form of a letter-typewritten.

Entries must contain the elements of a letter, place and date, addressee’s address, opening and closing salutation and signature.

On a separate sheet of paper, the participant must indicate the following information: Number of words of the letter, complete name and address, Gender of Candidate, Age and /or Date of Birth, Colored 2×2 Photo, Name and Address of School/Grade or Year Level and Contact Numbers (Telephone/Cellphone).

The first prize winner will receive P15,000.00 cash; second prize- P10,000.00 and  third prize- P5,000.00. All winners will also be awarded medals, plaques and albums of Philippine stamps.

The criteria for judging are relevance to the theme of the competition -30%; imagination and originality of the contents- 20%; demonstrates a good style of writing and communication -20%; demonstrates an extensive vocabulary-20% and youthfulness of tone-10%.

The Summer Games of the XXX Olympiad is scheduled from July 27 to August 12, 2012  to take place in London, United Kingdom. This will also be the second time for Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II to grace the opening ceremonies of the Olympic games , her first one was in 1976 in Montreal, Canada.

These 30th Olympic Games London 2012, has adopted the slogan of “Live as One” and the motto of “Inspire a Generation”.

London will become the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948. London was selected as the host city for the 2012 Olympics out of the nine cities that submitted bids by 15 July 2003.

Over 10,000 athletes from 204 National Olympics Committees (NOCs) are expected to participate. In the course of 19 days, athletes from around the globe will compete in 26 fields, in 39 different sports and in 34 separate venues. London 2012 Olympic Games begin on 27th July 2012 with the theme slogan ‘Inspire a Generation’.

There will be 11 Filipino athletes that will be competing in the 30th Olympiad.

The Philippines had begun issuing commemorative  stamps  of Olympic Games since the 17th Rome Olympics in 1960.

     According to a Philpost employee, as part of the memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) 5% of the sales proceeds will go to POC since there is the use of the POC and IOC logo.

Note : As of this writing there was a heavy demand from stamp and even Olympic memorabilia collectors in the country but also abroad. The author had waited for several hours at the Manila Main Central Post Office.

Orkidyas Photo and Orchid Exhibit Opening

It was a cloudy afternoon , when i left my workplace . Traffic along Rizal and Taft Avenue  was horrendous and manage to arrived in Adamson University just a few minutes before the appointed 3:00 p.m. I was greeted by friendly staffs of the cultural affairs office . They also gave me interesting student publication upon my registration in their guest book.

The  “Orkidyas”  exhibition  would be held for the third time ,  Professor Cuenco mounted a similar exhibition in Washington D.C . in 2010 and in other parts of the United States.

Professor Edwin Cuenco showcased his award winning exhibition of digital prints and photos entitled  ‘Orkidyas: In Celebration of Philippine Flora’ at the Art Gallery of Adamson University  in cooperation with the Philippine Orchid Society and sponsored by the Asian Social Institute and Adamson University, from July 13,2012 to August 3, 2012.

Dr. Gregorio Bañaga, Jr. in his welcome remarks told the visitors and invited guests that the University played an active role in molding the 16,000 students thru the  cultural affairs office . These events are open for FREE so that the students can learn to appreciate nature and learn how rich the biodiversity of the country.  The University had also other linkages with other institutions, NGO groups and other schools .

In Prof. Edwin Cuenco’s  speech , “The third installment of “Orkidyas” — showcases my personal print interpretation including some 25 photographic images of exotic Philippine flora provided by the Philippine Orchid Society after it was previously exhibited in Washington, DC and New York City. The artworks will hopefully reflect our cultural, ethnic, spiritual, aesthetic and verbal communication patterns, parallel to the immediacy of themes, sources and inspiration found in Philippine life and culture. This will be part of my U.S. Fulbright grant to promote cultural relations with emphasis on the visual arts between the U.S. and the Philippines.”

Prof. Cuenco received the University of Texas Outstanding Faculty Award in Teaching and Service, and the 2010 Distinguished Educator Award from the Arkansas Advertising Federation in Little Town, Arkansas, and the Visual Communications Graduate Fellowship Award from George Washington University. His works are found in private and public collections including the Wold Bank, George Washington University, Arkansas Tech University, University of Texas, and the Philippine Embassy in Washington, DC.

Prof. Edwin Cuenco of Arkansas Tech University arrived in ASI at the opening of the SY 2012 as a U.S. Fulbright Senior Scholar to the Philippines. He is a BFA fine arts graduate of PWU who worked at the Communications Center of the Asian Social Institute in 1990.

His graphic designs and digital illustrations have received ADDY Gold, Silver and Bronze juried recognitions from the American Advertising Federation in Texas, Virginia and Arkansas including Best of Show at the 12th National Computer Arts Juried Exhibition that was included in the U.S. Department of State’s traveling exhibition.

Cattleya Dr. Elenita Binay was breed by Ms. Vangie Go.  A noted Filipino plant breeder and collector of rare plants.  This cattleya hybrid  was named after one of her favorite client and friend Dr. Elenita S. Binay , the wife of  Hon. Jejomar Cabauatan Binay Sr.   the current Vice- President of the Philippines  .

Aside from photo exhibit, The beautifully arrange live plant exhibit which included native Aspleniun nidus ” mutant” varieties ,  Grammatophyllum multiflorum , Guzmania, Phalaenopsis hybrids, Renanthera hybrids, Dendrobium bullenianum , Dendrobium  hybrids, Anthurium hybrids and ornamental plants. This is a precursor for the upcoming 66th mid-year orchid show.

The live plant display exhibit were from the personal  collections of  Ms. Vangie Go , Mrs. Corazon Purificacion , Ms. Mary Ann-Wu and EnR Orchidlandia . Some of the live plants and orchids on display are also for sale for a reasonable price.

The invited guests, student writers, officers of the cultural affairs office, alumni  and top officials of the university treated everyone to a light afternoon meal.

The main objective of this exhibit is not just to promote the collaborative works of Philippine Orchid Society , Adamson University , Asian Social Institute ,  Professor Cuenco , Photographer groups   but also the advocacies and the urgent need to preserve and conserve these wonderful plants not only in our backyards but also in its natural habitats .
