Warner Brother Trade Show highlights

Grand Ballroom C, D and E  , Crowne Plaza Galleria Hotel, Ortigas , Quezon City -Philippines.

It was a cloudy afternoon with sporadic rainfall on July 31, 2012 when the author arrived at around past 2:00 pm at  the trade show organized by Warner Brother Consumer Products ( WBCP) , Pacific Licensing Studio (PLS ) and MCT Event Management.

WBCP highlighted its current portfolio  led by Man of Steel ( Philippine release :  June 2013) and the two other films based on The Hobbit , The Hobbit : An Expected Journey (Philippine release:  December 2012 ) .

 Animated properties featuring Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo , Tom and Jerry and the Thunder Cats , along with many DC Comics favorite characters . Also featured are such classic properties as The Wizard of OZ and the television series , including Gossip Girl and The Big Bang Theory .

Tweety  merchandise items ranging from children’s dress, bags , school supplies and stuffed toys.

The whole ballroom was filled with wide array of consumer products ranging  from children’s t-shirts, stuffed toys, mouse pad, toys , shampoo , lotions, school supplies, pencils , erasers , tooth brushes , phone cards, yogurt , chocolate milk ,  credit cards ( from Indonesia ), tumblers, stickers , car freshener , USB , helmet  and other items,  some of which are highly collectible .

In the late 1990’s Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT ) had license agreement with Pacific Licensing  Company that released several phone cards with  Warner Brother cartoon characters in the local market , some of the PLDT phone cards are now regarded as collectible items.

Ms. Carol Tan was instrumental with forging a  key strategic financial partner in 2003 , PT Bank Central Asia Tbk Indonesia to launch a co-branded BCA/Mastercard credit card featuring the classic Looney Tunes, which was the first of its kind in South East Asia.

The original series started in a comic strip in 1984 and due to the success. It was launch by Pacific Animation Corporation. The first season was aired in  1985 with 65 episodes , followed by a television movie entitled Thunder Cats- HO ! in 1986.  While season 2, 3 and 4 followed a different format with twenty episode per season. Starting with five- part story . The original series was distributed by Rankin-Bass Corporation then parent company of Telepictures Corporation which later merged with Lorimar Productions in 1986.

 In 1989 Lorimar- Telepictures , then folded and was purchased by Warner Brothers  hence forth had acquired the rights to air and market the series.

There is almost every item that is suitable from babies (several months old-to 1 year -old) ,  toddlers  ( 2 to 5 years -old) , children ( 6 to 9 years-old ) , teenagers ( 10 to 14 years-old )  young adults ( 15 to 17 years-old )  to adults .

There are a whole lot of items manufactured from different parts of Asia like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Singapore , China, Vietnam and  from the Philippines.

In fact, according to one of Pacific Licensing executive, The Philippines ranks third in Southeast Asia ( in terms of  product license ), after Indonesia and Thailand . This is mainly to majority of the Filipinos who grew -up watching Warner Brothers , DC  and its long history of  pop- culture .

A Question and Answer portion serves as an ice breaker for those participants present.  The emcee tried another trivia question   ” Who was the actor who played in the the 1966 to 1968 television series  Batman ?” .  I confidently answered  ” Mr. Adam West”  He then  asked me if i was already born back then ? Hehehe , I told the crowd that i used to watch the re-runs in cable television station.

Then, a video program was presented to the participants and upcoming movie releases , television shows and merchandise items for  sale or for licensing . I have met some retail mall executives,  industry players ,  fellow bloggers and newspaper editors.

Three Philippine companies were awarded by Pacific Licensing Company during the event.

I also met my cousin and several friends during the trade show. I was not aware that my cousin had been franchising Warner Brother characters , DC characters thru Pacific Licensing and have been supplying school bags  in some malls .

The participants were treated to a hearty late afternoon canape  catered by the Crowne Plaza Galleria staffs .

Universal Postal Union letter writing contest for 2013

PHLPost launches Int’l letter writing contest

 The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) invites students 15-years old and below to join the 42nd Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition for Young People.  The winning piece will be sent by PHLPost as the Philippines’ official entry in the worldwide letter writing competition to be held in Berne, Switzerland.

The contest is a yearly event organized by PhilPost under the auspices of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which is composed of 191 countries around the world of which the Philippines is an active member.

The 2013 competition asks young people to write a letter to someone to tell them “why water is precious”. The theme coincides with the International Decade for Action “Water for Life” 2005–2015.

The compositions must be recent and original letters written in English according to the theme of the competition. It must not exceed the limit of 800 words in length in the form of a letter-typewritten.

Entries must contain the elements of a letter, place and date, addressee’s address, opening and closing salutation and signature.

On a separate sheet of paper, the participant must indicate the following information: Number of words of the letter, complete name and address, Gender of Candidate, Age and /or Date of Birth, Colored 2×2 Photo, Name and Address of School/Grade or Year Level and Contact Numbers (Telephone/Cellphone).

The first prize winner will receive P15,000.00 cash; second prize- P10,000.00 and  third prize- P5,000.00. All winners will also be awarded medals, plaques and albums of Philippine stamps.

The criteria for judging are relevance to the theme of the competition -30%; imagination and originality of the contents- 20%; demonstrates a good style of writing and communication -20%; demonstrates an extensive vocabulary-20% and youthfulness of tone-10%.

All entries must be mailed at any post offices nationwide by Express or Registered Mail not later than October 9, 2012 to: Office of the Assistant Postmaster General for Operations c/o Ms. Jocelyn E. Cacho- Special Project Officer 3/F Philippine Postal Corporation, Liwasang Bonifacio 1000 Manila.
