Ms. Erly Egargue is known to many as Ms. Erly , proprietor of EnR Orchids located in Manila Seedling Bank . She started as a sales lady of plants and orchids before venturing into a plant business. A first time landscape exhibitor , She almost missed entering her Dendrobium Thongchai Gold X C.K. Ai “Oka” in the competition if not for the persistent pleading from her friends who think that her orchids had a big chance of winning in the competition. Her last minute decision in entering the competition rewarded her with ” Best Dendrobium orchid ” in the Philippine Orchid Society’s 66th mid-year orchid and garden show.

Floral Designers’ Circle of the Philippines is a group of flower enthusiast and¬† hobbyists which provides an alternative style in their flower arrangement . Their members are often invited in several garden related events , ikebana association and flower arrangement competition in the Philippines and abroad.

After several days of torrential rains, the big day happened just few hours ago with the invited guests of honor led by Quezon City officials, Bureau of Plant Industry , president of various horticultural societies ,  plant enthusiasts, media, bloggers were treated into an afternoon of fun and excitement as the much anticipated opening of the 66th Mid-Year Orchid and Garden show unfolded .

Phalaenopsis gigantea is native to the island of  Borneo. This orchid is found in the states of  Sabah, Sarawak in  Malaysia , Brunei Darussalam  and in Kalimantan in  Indonesia and was described in 1909. Named for its gigantic leaves that can grow more than 70 centimeters in cultivation while there are some unverified reports that some specimen can reach up to more than 100 centimeters ! The massive leaves are pendent , leathery , broadly rounded, pale silvery green and shiny on both surface.

The colors of this species may be rather variable and the flowers have delicately scented.  The color may vary from cream, whitish , yellow , yellow -greenish found clearly at the base of the sepals and petals.

Phalaenopsis gigantea produces the biggest leaves of the genus and is the bulkiest leaves of its kind . This Phalaenopsis species is called ” Elephant ears ” in its native habitat of Malaysia and Indonesia because of its large- sized¬† leaves which resembles elephant’s ears .

In the Philippines, there are some growers and orchid hobbyists which grow this particular orchid species for curiosity and for breeding purposes.

Best Other Genera – Monopodial Orchid ” Renanthera philippinensis ” Exhibited By Ms. Vangie Go

A medium sized , monopodial orchid found in many parts of the country particularly near mangrove swamps and lower elevation forest with erect to semi-pendulous stem carrying unequally bilobed apical leaves that can bloom in any time of the year . In some parts of the country , this orchid species is called ” fire orchids ” since the bloody red color of the flowers which looks like blazing fire.

Renanthera philippinensis  is called FIRE Orchids or Red Waling-waling

Folklore :

In parts of Real , Quezon province people there called this orchid species as ” red waling-waling ”¬† Aside from the beauty that this orchid processes, There are a lot of superstitious belief which associate the widespread growing of this species in its native range . Some people believe it can be a lucky charm or good luck plant. Some people believes that the orchids can ward -off evil spirits because of its reddish flower, While some people preserve the flowers for rituals .

Vanda sanderina or Euanthe sanderiana is an endemic orchid found in the southern parts of the country.  There are some recognized varieties of this orchid species , some of which are exhibited in the ongoing 66th Mid-Year orchid and garden show.

Jose B. Laurel 100th birth anniversary stamp issue

This estate which is located within Shaw boulevard in Mandaluyong City was originally built in 1957 by President Jose P. Laurel . The Laurel estate¬† is called Villa Paciencia in honor of the late President’s wife, Pacienca Hidalgo, the Shaw Boulevard house is the biggest of the three residences that Laurel built. The mansion is said to rushed in time for the arrival of the New Hampshire newspaper publisher, James Langley. Laurel and Langley headed a group that forged what would be known as the Laurel-Langley Agreement of 1956, which extended parity rights to Americans. When Langley came in 1957, Laurel hosted a luncheon in his honor at the mansion.

The Laurel mansion in shaw boulevard¬† sits on 1,000 square meter property of a total 6,000 square meter lot which was formerly a cogon areas. ¬† He also built a house in Tanauan, which the Laurels consider their ancestral home, and another in Paco, Manila, called the Villa Pe√Īafrancia.

Now, beside it is presently being utilized as Senator Manny Villar’s campaign headquarters was bought in the later part of 2007  . Although this is not my first time to set foot inside the mansion, ( I used to work in an event company  nearby , hence was able to take a few snapshots of the facade few years ago )

It will very soon be the site of a new condominium complex.  The plan is said to built 4  building  complex in which the old mansion will serve as a focal point of the project .

A few weeks ago , opportunity arose when Mrs. Elenita San Diego ( Head- Philatelic and Postage Department ) , Speaker  Laurel Foundation and  Villar Foundation  invited selected group of people , stamp enthusiasts,   the press for the stamp launching and an evening meal  at this house.

Built in 1957, Villa Pacencia stood amidst grasslands by then former President Jose P. Laurel, President of the second Philippine Republic. He  used it as his official residence and as a political hub .

The house had its share of distinguished guests; US Senator Brian Langley and Indonesia’s first President Sukarno, to name just a few.

The place later came to be referred to as the ‚ÄúNacionalista Party house.‚Ä̬† It was at this residence where several of the country‚Äôs leaders and public officials were honed and produced.

The  special function area can accommodate up to 300 people and is an ideal place to hold special functions like corporate meetings, weddings , debuts and political conventions.

When we toured the place, we went up the original spiral staircase, walked through the arched hallways, look up at its vaulted ceiling and inspected the original wood used when the house was constructed 55 years ago. According to one of the Laurel clan member, There used to be a  third storey ( watch tower ) where they would come and play whenever they would visit the old-house.

Its wide windows offer a view of the Japanese-inspired zen garden, live potted flowering orchid display  and fishpond . Several birds were gracefully gliding within this open space. This part of the house brought us back to a time long forgotten but there also was a room that looked modern.

Speaker Jose B. Laurel honored :

During President Corazon Aquino’s presidency, he was appointed to the Constitutional Commission that drafted the 1987 Constitution. He is recognized as one of the co-authors of the “Filipino First” policy in the constitution. He died on March 11, 1998 at the age of 85.

It was earlier this year, when I heard news about the on-going proposal for the issuance of the Metro Bank ‚Äės company‚Äôs golden anniversary commemorative stamp through the Philippine Postal Corporation ( Philpost ) . Mrs. Elenita San Diego (Philatelic and Postage Department head) and Mr. Reynaldo Ong de Jesus (member of the stamp advisory committee) then invited me as a guest during one of the stamp advisory meeting consultation.

Although it was not my first time to attend such advisory meetings . As a philatelist (stamp collector),  being invited in such a meeting is always been a privilege and an honor to meet the current stamp advisory board led by the enigmatic Postmaster General Maria Josefina Dela Cruz and board members of the stamp advisory committee.

Everyone is doing their job since there are various representatives from different government agencies like National Commission for the Culture and the Arts, National Historical Commission of the Philippines for historical validation, representative from stamp collecting clubs and other important people who can share their talent, wisdom and knowledge in the stamp design, marketing and public awareness.

History :

One of the highlights of its 50th anniversary celebration this year, the Metropolitan Bank & Trust Company ( Metrobank) unveiled to the public a collection of 4 commemorative stamps that chronicles the milestones in the bank’s history as symbolized by four significant structure built by the institution.
