Philippine Transit APP Challenge Night!

The Philippine Transit App Challenge, launched by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) alongside the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Cebu City Government in early July this year, netted seventeen (17) entries from which the 10 finalists were chosen.
Ten (10) pre-selected finalists for the country’s first national transport app development competition will present and demonstrate their apps during the hack-at-home event’s awarding ceremony later  14 October 2013, at the University of the Philippines campus in Quezon City.

These apps focus on empowering commuters to choose the fastest, cheapest, or most convenient commuting options in Metro Manila based on DOTC’s Philippine Transit Information Service (PTIS) database. Some of them target specific market segments, such as tourists who are exploring the city.

They include apps that allow searching for points-of-interest in the user’s vicinity, a guide for going around and exploring Manila by train, one that allows passengers to give a tip to well-behaving jeepney and other public utility drivers through a text message, apps that provide route suggestions via SMS, and a few that combine the transit data with crowd-sourced traffic information for more intelligent trip-planning.

The competition is in line with the transport agency’s push for open data, which entails releasing government information to the public for better transparency, promoting innovation through the use of information technology, and enhancing the delivery of government services.

‚ÄúThis open data initiative has allowed all these developers to create apps which we hope will make commuting in Metro Manila more convenient for many people,‚ÄĚ said DOTC Spokesperson¬† Mr.Migs Sagcal.

The Philippine Transit App Challenge Culminating Night will be held at the GT-Toyota Auditorium at the Asia Learning Center in UP Diliman. Registration starts at 4:30pm. It is made possible by the World Bank and AusAid. For more information, please visit the competition’s official website,

Caritas Manila: 60th anniversary- Living Faith in Social Mission

2002 Jesus Street, Pandacan-1001 Manila-Philippines

Cardinal Rufino Santos

CARITAS MANILA is the lead Catholic agency for social services and development of the Archdiocese of Manila. Its programs and services are directed towards the total human development of marginalized people and the promotion of social justice in the light of the Church’s Catholic Social Teaching.

Father Anton C.T.  Pascual

Father Anton Pascual brief the bloggers and media about the mission and vision of the organization.

Caritas Manila- Pavilion

Caritas Manila Foundation directly serves the 13 vicariates of the Archdiocese and provides technical assistance to parish social services and development ministries, and acts as catalyst for capacity-building and networking for five other Metro Manila dioceses.

social media and bloggers were invited to the event

CARITAS, which means love in perfection. Through our programs and services, we aim to concretize the love of God among 52 percent of Metro Manila’s population who are poor, the “least, last and lost” among us. Caritas Manila, then known as Catholic Charities, founded on October 1953 by the late Archbishop of Manila Rufino Cardinal Santos.

products from less privilage communities

He conceived it to be “a social welfare program with the purpose of uplifting the spirit of the unfortunate members of our community, to assist them in all their needs, and to bring the help of God in their miseries and distress.”

The concept is almost similar with other charitable organizations  like Salvation Army in the United States or Beautiful Store in South Korea. However , Caritas Manila is a Catholic church initiative and not just a mere dole-out projects but teaching one community on how to make a living.

art work from sun rays done by inmates

What Jesus taught about how to get a fish was:
Matthew 7:7: Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
