5 Important Highlights of 5th Las Piñas Food Festival

Las Piñas city had some 20 barangays got together on May 18 held at  Villar SIPAG square in C5 Extension Road, Pulang Lupa Uno in Las Piñas City. The participants had showcase their best dishes and desserts for the annual cooking competition that kicked off the festivities for the city’s 2018 Food Festival.

1.) There are 40 medium , small and micro businesses which had participated in the annual event.

Malagos Chocolate from Davao

2.) 4th Urban Gardening competition- several schools and community participated in the competition.

The winners were the BF International/CAA for the Inter-Barangay category, the Las Pinas East National High School for the Inter-School category, and the Phase 3 West Talon 2 for the Inter-Homeowners Associations category. Each category winner received a trophy and a cash prize of P50, 000 each.

Kalabasang Kalamay

3.) Home Cooked Dishes- Kalabasang Kalamay is a 3-time winner in the annual cook-off. Made from the original recipe of Kagawad Aida of Talon Dos. This is made from local squash and had a shelf life of between 3 to 5 days without refrigeration.

Sen. Cynthia A. Villar welcomed the participants as she lauded them for going the extra mile in using modern techniques to make original and sumptuous culinary creations that display the Filipinos’ imaginative minds and innovative skills.

4.)Celebrity guests- Among the special guests includes Senator Nancy Binay, Senator JV Ejercito and Governor Imee Marcos. The guests also gave away Php 2,000 to all of the participants of the cook -off as a token.

Filipinos are popular for their ingenuity. We are known for our ability to replicate foreign dishes and changing their tastes by introducing local ingredients to give them the unique flavors of the Philippine islands. Through this cooking competition, residents of Las Piñas City become gastronomic witnesses to the creativity of our local cooking experts,’ said Villar, director of the Villar Social Institute for Poverty Alleviation and Governance (Villar SIPAG).

5.) Barangay Talon 2 made the biggest impact and brought home P20,000 and a trophy for bagging the grand prize. Its entry Inadobong Lapu-Lapu sa Mantikilya and  Cala-Squash Soup. The competing participants were given a time table of about 1 hour to finish the challenge.

Barangay Pilar won the 1st Runner-Up trophy and P15,000 cash prize for its Lapu-Lapu Carmalized Onion and Mixed Vegetable Sour Soup. On the other hand, Barangay Talon 3 won P10,000 and a trophy as the 2nd Runner-Up for its Salmon with Hollandaise Sauce and Potato Soup in Sampaloc Broth.

Golden Oats- free taste

Golden Oats if one of the home grown enterprises located within the city.

The cooking competition entries were judged according to the following criteria: Overall impact and plating (30%); Taste (30%); Creativity and visual appeal (15%); Technique used (15%); and Hygiene and sanitation (10%).

For this year’s event festivities, the Villar SIPAG partnered with Silver Swan, Apicius, ELBA, Mushroomburger, Jollibee and Golden Oats to ensure the success of the gathering.

FREE postal heritage tour and special stamp exhibition

Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPOST) in partnership with National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and Philippine Philatelic Federation will be having a stamp exhibition entitled ” Selyong Pamana”  from May 21 to 28, 2018. In lieu with this stamp exhibition and national heritage month. Walkwithchan in partnership with PHLPOST will have a special FREE walking tour and a tour within the Manila Central Post Office will be held on May 26, 2018 Saturday from 8:30 am to 12:00nn

Highlights of the Cactus Fiesta Fair 3

Cactus and Succulent Society of the Philippines in cooperation with Quezon Memorial Circle Administration, Quezon City government and different sellers had a successful 3 -day bazaar and trade fair within the Runnex elevated garden within Quezon Memorial Circle.

The golden barrel cactus is one of the cacti and succulents that the group is selling. This specimen sized cacti cost about Php 20,000 and had been sold before the end of the show. Cactus Village is a wholesaler of cactus and succulents for more than 10 years . They used to have stalls in the defunct Manila Seedling Bank.
