Mang Tootz Foodhaus was named after Mr. Edwin “Mang Tootz”  Vergara a former OFW who opened a carinderia or eatery with a twist.

The carinderia had a huge following among students of UST, FEU, UE and residents of Sampaloc district within Manila. Proof to the pudding is that hundreds of students would queue in line just to eat even before lunch.

We would find time to eat at their eatery when we have long breaks. The price of their student rice meal is affordable and it comes free with soup.

Some of the dishes are newly created like chicken kebab. Rice value meals starts at Php 78.00 and Php 83.00 depending on the viand. One can order other dishes.

History

Mang Tootz started in 1991 as a tapsilogan and was used to be located in a small corner along J. Barlin street within Sampaloc.

It used to be called Tootzilog. The eatery eventually moved to Padre Noval street because the proprietors thought that it would be wiser to transfer location since they will be situated near the university with higher foot traffic. Technically, they are in the business for almost 30 years!

Several television program had featured this eatery like My Puhunan of ABS-CBN channel 2, TV channel 5, Kapuso Jessica Soho, Pinas Sarap, Unang Hirit of GMA channel 7, Solar TV, Tomasino and Food Vloggers like Mark Wiens, Erwan Heussaff, The Hungry Syrian Wander, Yummy Kitchen, Coconuts Manila among others.

UAAP athletes, former President Benigno Aquino III were among those who have eaten at the eatery.

There were 16 to 18 dishes being rotated on an everyday basis in Sampaloc and Makati.

Pork Bulgogi– Their pork is well marinated and their pork is tender. There are also some vegetables included and topped with sesame seeds.

Chopsuey – All time favorite with a lot of vegetables. Their vegetables is not soggy compared to others within the vicinity.

Bicol Express– Another MUST try dish when you visit this eatery, the pork meat is cooked just right with right amount of coconut milk ( not aguado/ watered down) and the right amount of banana chilies and bird’s eye chilies.

Pork Binagoongan– The right balance of sweet, sour and salty combination.

 Banana rhum-A is an all time favorite since it was first introduced in 2006. They cook an average of 3,000 to 4,000 pieces a day. One must pre-order at least 1 day in advance for bulk orders. During Christmas season, their order are up to 8,000 pieces per day.

Their banana rhum-A – is smaller compared to the ordinary turon being sold in street corners in Metro Manila. It is a saba banana sliced into 4 pieces with jackfruit wrapped in lumpia wrapper then deep fried. coated with a syrup made from a combination of margarine, pineapple juice, rhum, banana essence and brown sugar. It is topped with powdered sugar, skim milk, cinnamon powder and sesame seeds.

Pork Liempo – This is an all time favorite among students. However this was not available when we came.

Sisig – Another MUST Try, This was not available when we ate at the eatery.

There is no secret to why this is a favorite hang-out place. Their food is delicious,  affordable, staff are friendly and the neighborhood vibe would surely keep anyone from returning back.

MAMAloLa : Neighborhood Food Stall with Exotic Dishes

MamaloLa is a neighborhood food stall which opened their 3rd branch in Novaliches area. The food stall if offering dishes which may seem exotic .

The first restaurant and food outlet opened about 1 year and half at Sauyo Road . This is the first branch. People from Sauyo, Bagbag and Fairview areas were its first customers.

Eventually they opened their second outlet store in Goodwill Homes 1 , San Bartolome Novaliches about 10 months ago .

 The Goodwill branch is smaller compared to the Sauyo road which had bigger place for dine -in customers. the food outlet had small patio area for those who wanted to order and take-out.

A couple of months ago the food business had opened their 3rd branch in Hillcrest Foood Park in , Novaliches -North Caloocan City .

Among the best sellers are Chinese -style vegetarian kikiam ( quekiam ) ( Php 35 each or 3 for Php 100)  and mix -meat and vegetarian style ( Php 60 )

Currently the food stall is getting popular among the residents of Goodwill 1, Kingspoint , San Pedo IX , California Village and nearby areas . Some of the foods they offer includes fried itik, Peking duck , fried crocodile , horse meat , goat meat, fried quail , crocodile soup among others. These foods are favorite pulutan ( finger food) or even exotic meal for special occasions.

The crocodile meat is cooked in different styles – steak ( Php 250 ) sisig (Php 200) adobo ( Php 200) kaldereta ( Php 200) bicol express ( Php 200 ) and croc soup #5 ( Php 180) The food stall is also offering Lechon buwaya ( crocodile ) but customer must pre-order at least 1 week in advance.

Kangay Restaurant : Bagnet and Coffee Restaurant

Kangay restaurant is a new restaurant chain in Norzagaray , Bulacan. According to the proprietor , They opened a small restaurant about 4 years ago and had been doing well. This prompted them to open a new coffee shop and restaurant a few months ago.

The new restaurant is quaint and had a sitting capacity ( air-condition ) of between 35 to 40 people at any given time. There is also a small patio area good for 4 to 5 people sitting outside.

According to Mr. Roy Vincent Santiago – Kangay is a term ” To Eat ”  used by local people of Norzagaray whenever there are occasions such as town fiesta or special events.

The restaurant’s menu offers coffee , ice cream, beverages, snack items like nachos, spaghetti , carbonara, fish fries, french fries , pansit canton, rice topping like Beef Pares and Chilli Thai Beef only at Php 79.00 per meal

We must say that it was the in-house specialties like Bagnet Rice , Kare-Kare Rice and Bicol Express ( Kangay’s Bagnet ) which the group had eaten .

BAHAY BUFFET Exciting Farm Tour and Buffet Meal at MOCA Farm

BAHAY BUFFET  is a new out of the box concept  offering buffet meals .The word bahay ( house )  is capitalized to mean: Buffet At Home is Always Yummy. This new venture aims to introduce consumers to up-and-coming hole in the wall eateries, small farms, family style -resort , micro-entrepreneurs and other stake holders in the food industry.

We met at around past 8:00am at Hotel Intercontinental , Makati city and traveled more than 2 hours to MOCA Farm in Padre Garcia, Batangas province. We arrived past 11:30am .

The town of Padre Garcia is known for their several farms which are family owned , while some are owned by large and multi-national companies.

We were treated with some late morning breakfast meal and (Kapeng barako/ baraco ) Batangas style brew which used Liberica coffee beans as the main ingredient.

Zesty Santol with Pork in Coconut Milk and Chillies \

  Cotton fruit or more popularly known as Santol  Sandoricum koetjape  ) in the Philippines. It is a seasonal fruit which ripen around April, May and June depending on the locality.

I have tasted similar santol recipes when we went to Quezon ( less spicy ) , Laguna ( less spicy ) and Bicol region.

The owner is from Bicol region ( Albay province )  Her recipe is authentic and very similar to Bicol express ( with the use of santol pulp, siling pansigang , pork  topped with finger chillies) . While the one that i have tasted in Quezon  and Laguna uses santol pulp , little ground pork / shredded fish ( tilapia ) and grounded black pepper with little or no chillies. It is a good way to use santol for cooking , since whenever there is an over supply of santol  fruit, prices tend to goes down and there are a lot of fruits that are gone to waste.

Clitoria ternatea

Clitoria ternatea, common names including butterfly pea, blue pea,blue ternatea , Cordofan pea . ) This is popular among Southeast Asian countries as ornamental plant and it is being used as coloring for foods, juice , salads, and had been known for centuries as a memory enhancer, nootropic, antistress, anxiolytic and herbal remedies.

This is a different style of lumpia /lunpia – Unlike others, this is presented using saba banana cooked in syrup and the wrapper is toasted / fried

The host for this month’s buffet meal and farm tour is MOCA FARM , a 1 hectare  family owned and managed farm which used to be an Indian mango orchard before Ms. Gigi Morris slowly converted the farm into what we see today. The farm is brightly decorated with sunflower tablecloth reflecting the sunny personality by the gracious host.

The farm is very quaint and had a charming atmosphere which can accommodate up to 50 person at a given time. ( appointment must be made weeks in advance)

The area is now slowly recovering from the onslaught of Typhoon Rammasun ( Bagyong Glenda) which struck the Southern Luzon provinces  only last year 2014. Trees that were toppled down during the typhoon were carefully festooned with flowering plants or designed into wooden chairs.

 We were served with a late breakfast meal – Tamales ( Padre Garcia version ) with dried coconut latik and syrup made from sunflower seeds !  I have tasted different Tamales from different provinces  and this tamales had no stuffing like meat , shrimps and eggs .  It is made from sticky rice grounded  ( galapong ) and wrapped in banana leaves.

This is a different style and squarish .The coconut latik and syrup made from sunflower seeds made it quite different . This native delicacy had gradually evolved thru centuries from the original Tamales from Mexico.

There were also different kinds of coffee beans – Liberica ( bigger seed granules) –Excelsa , Robusta

Geodorum densiflorum

Geodorum densifolium is a common terrestrial orchid found in many areas of the country. I was able to spot a living orchid with seed capsules  I told the owner about the status so that they will not pull them off the growing area.

The farm had native chickens, native pigs, Chinese silkie chickens, rabbits , vegetables , fruits and large Indian mangoes.

After the hearty meal and a short farm tour. We left the farm around past 3:00PM on our way to the next venue place. I would definitely invite friends and tourists to the event hosted by Bahay Buffet and MOCA Farm .

Based on the story – Jo’s Chicken Inato started in mid 1980’s. It is owned by Jesse and Josephine Ng of Negros , where the name of the place was derived. The name originated from a shorten word “atin ito” thus  “inato” meant the way they cooked chicken.  compared to other Visayan  styled grilled barbecue ,this recipe is not salty and has a sweeter taste ( due to ingredients and special way of marinating )

The restuarant is not only famous for their chicken inato but also buko halo-halo , lumpia, pancit macao, bicol express  and special lechon kawali .

The place had several nipa hut ideal for small meetings. The restaurant had an interesting aquariums stock  with kois, pangasius, tilapias  while a  special glass coop had several small bantam chickens . The place is perfect venue to hold medium to large  reception . Orchids and ornamental plants are distributed  all over the place . The high ceilings allows heat to escape during hot morning  with interesting banga ( jars) in place for washing hands.  People are encourage to used their hands when eating at this place ala “kamayan style” .

Anthony Taberna -host Umagang Kay Ganda / Kalye and DZMM ,Ms. Charlene Gonzales- Mulach, Ms. Winnie Cordero, columnist Mr. Zacarias Sarian , GMA channel 7 reporter Mr. Cedric Castillo, former Caloocan City Mayor Rey Malonzo  were  said to be frequent patrons of the place.
