Chef Orvin Sayos version of Pad Thai at the Cavite Food and Culinary Expo 2019

Chef Orvin Sayos of Lime and Basil Thai Restaurant and Atlas Culinary Institute shows how Pad Thai is made at the recent Cavite Food and Culinary Expo 2019 last July 28 at the Isla Event Center in Imus, Cavite province.

Pad Thai is well known Thai noodle dish which can be made in under 30 minutes. It starts with fresh ingredients including rice noodles, chicken, shrimp, tofu, cilantro, bean sprouts, peanuts and scrambled eggs tossed in a delicious homemade pad thai sauce that is so good it tastes like it came from your favorite Thai restaurant.

We love on how he shared his skills in cooking. We like the taste of the noodles. I have tasted different kinds of Pad Thai from different Thai restaurants in Metro Manila. Although some of the participants prefer a little bit spicy.

Aroi Maak at Soi Thai Restaurant in Glorietta 2

Aroi Maak which means Very Delicious in ” Thai ” language. The warm “Sawasdee” greeting and ambiance is perfect treat your friends, relatives and a great hang-out place which deeply reflects the Thai culture.

Soi is a classy Thai restaurant which reflect the different culinary regions of Thailand. This is one of the concept restaurants established by the proprietors .

We went to Glorietta 2 Mall within the sprawling Ayala triangle area. At least 70% of their ingredients were sourced from Thailand, especially the spices, natural ingredients and even fixtures , While the remaining 30% like fresh vegetables , fish and meat products are sourced locally – This is to ensure quality ingredients.

This do it yourself Thai version of halo-halo is not very sweet compared to the local halo-halo , This can serve between 2 to 3 persons ( Php 138.00)

Thai spring roll with 2 types of sauces -one from peanut and hoisin sauce (Php 168)

Sukothai soup combined with broth , noodles , meat balls , asado meat , tofu , mungbean sprouts , coriander leaves and other spices ( Php 298) per order -ideal for sharing between 2 to 4 people . One can add chopped chilies to add spice .

Pad Thai noodles- available in 3 kinds-Shrimp (Php 298) , Chicken ( Php 248) and Tofu ( Php 198) Ideal for sharing between 2 to 4 persons . MUST TRY

What makes this dish even more interesting is the intricate web-like topping made from egg and batter mixture.

Crispy Catfish Flakes with Mango Salad

This is one of the MUST TRY , when you visit the restaurant , The Crispy Catfish Flakes with Mangoes , chopped onions and coriander leaves with fresh slices of chilies (Php 258) sharing between 2 to 4 persons.

Pork Satay with Tom Yum soup 

Soi is also known for their Chicken Satay , (Php 238.) per order , Grilled Squid ( Php 290) per order , Chicken Leg Barbecue ( Php 290 ) per order and Pork Satay ( Php 238) per order Each order is also accompanied with its own dipping condiments . Tom Yum can also be adjusted for its spiciness.

Bagoong Fried Rice

Bagoong Fried Rice ( Php 198) for sharing between 2 to 4 people , This had all the usual ingredients like salted duck egg, sliced cucumber , pork , bagoong ( shrimp paste ) , sliced mangoes , chopped string beans ,sliced onion,  dried shrimp , scrambled egg and chopped chilies for topping and added spice.  A dash of lime will balance the taste.

Fried Rice with Seafood and Basil Leaves ( Php 278) for sharing between 2 to 4 people.

Its tagline ” Eat Thai , Love Thai ” will surely captivate everyone, One can also request to them on how much spices ( more chilies ) or no chilies. Adjusting them on your own taste preferences.

Glorietta 2 branch had between 45 to 48 sitting capacity and it can get full during lunch , dinner and on weekends.

Amazing Just Thai : Different Flavors of Thailand

One can easily spot the Thai -inspired place with its unique embellishment and architecture along the rows of restaurants . Thai food is known for the combination of complex flavors — sour, spicy, sweet , salty and to some extent minty .

 Gae Sate is Chicken satay on stick is tender and the peanut sauce is a perfect combination. The side garnish which are from finely cut vegetables adds color and presentation . Php 290 per order ( good for 3 to 4 people)

Poh Piah Tod is crispy Thai spring roll filled with glass noodles and special sweet and spicy dip . It is accompanied with chopped vegetables which add texture and color to the dish. Normally serve as a form of appetizer and fried spring rolls is common in Southeast Asian cuisine. Php 260 per serving.

What is nice about the dishes of the restaurant is one can adjust the varying degrees of spiciness in order to adjust to one preference. One can ask for Filipino spicy or Thai spicy – Filipino spicy tend to be less spicy and comparable to Bicol and Eastern Samar taste, While Thai spicy is at least several times more spicy compared to the Filipino level of  spicy.

Yam Neua  or Thai beef salad is a nice combination of beef , lettuce, chopped tomatoes ,  cucumber with light salad dressing with chopped onions and chili pepper – JUST Thai style.  The beef salad can be shared with 2 to 4 people . (Php350) per serving

Kung Kratien  or  prawns in garlic and pepper in soup , It is mildly flavored  and not soggy . You will know that the prawns and the ingredients are fresh by simply tasting the food. ( Php 500 ) per serving

Blah Pla Muek Kratien  or squid with garlic and pepper in soup.  The soup is mildly flavored can be adjusted with the addition of extra chopped chillies .

Pad Gaprow Talay- seafood mix with fried basil leves

Pad Gaprow Talay -The sea food mixture  of mussels ( tahong ), prawns and squid plus crispy fried basil leaves with coconut sauce. The crispy fried basil leaves add a distinct minty flavor which further enhances the sea foods .  Perfect for sharing with 2 to 4 people (Php 280)

Gaeng Leuang

Just Thai also offers vegetarian-friendly dishes like the Gaeng Leuang (vegetables in yellow curry). It had a healthy serving of tofu, broccoli, eggplant, bell pepper,  string beans in rich coconut milk with yellow curry topped with chopped red chillies and chopped coriander leaves ( Php 260 ) for sharing 2 to 4 people.

Pad Thai is a stir fried rice noodle  dish commonly served as a street food and at casual local eateries in Thailand. It is made with soaked dried rice noodles, which are stir-fried with eggs  and chopped firm tofu , mung bean sprouts , flavored with tamarind pulp, fish sauce, dried shrimp, coriander leaves and the flavor is enhanced with peanuts and chopped red chillies. This is some sort of ” National Noodle ” of Thailand . A visit to any Thai restaurant is a must try of this dish. The dish is neatly presented before you can mix all the ingredients.

The place is a favorite place to hang-out among the expatriate communities, celebrities  and even employees of nearby establishments .  Thai foods and delicacies is one of the top choices for Asian foodies .

How to Get There:

Take the BGC hybrid bus from bus station located near McKinley Road and near MRT- Ayala station ( Upper West Route) . The bus had designated bus stop and take -off at the second bus stop which is at the back of the MIND Museum. A short walk toward Forbes Town Road, Burgos Circle, Global City.  Transportation fee is just Php 12.00 from the bus station.

Most Filipinos have some misconception about Thai foods; some would shy away from eating for they are considered spicy.

The owners like to eat Thai food and would crave for authentic foods; they had to travel several times in Thailand just to sample foods for the country.

The restaurant had an appealing ambiance; one had a feeling of being transported to Bangkok or Chiang Mai in a simple Thai inspired interior decoration.

The restaurant had a total sitting capacity of between 80 to 85 people at any given time. It is divided into several sections.

For outdoor- The restaurant can sit between 30 to 35 people. One can enjoy the outdoor ambiance and see the other buildings and colorful street lights .

Thai style- Tamarind Juice

Ice Tamarind is another MUST, The ingredients are sweet tamarind from Thailand.

Unlike other teas, the restaurant use fresh tea leaves from Thailand. It is refreshing taste and not too sweet.

Poh Piah Tod

Poh Piah Tod or Thai Spring Rolls– deep fried with vegetables, pork and mushroom. It is crunchy on the outside but soft inside, It is best accompanied with fresh side garnish of coriander leaves and finely chopped vegetables like carrots and cabbage  and a sweet chili sauce dip! Php 260 per order . MUST TRY !

This is perfect for 2 to 3 people sharing.

Yum Pla Dook Foo

Crispy Catfish with Sliced Green Mangoes – What I liked about this dish is that the catfish bones removed, then deep fried . It is flaky substance similar to floss and very easy to eat, no hassle to de-bone the fish. It goes perfect with finely sliced Thai guapple mangoes, chopped fresh chilies and chopped onions and a dip. Php 300 per order. It is prefect meal to be shared with 2 to 3 people. Highly Recommended !

 Som Tam

Som Tam is Green Papaya Salad which is similar in texture with our own achara minus the heavy marination of vinegar . It is freshly made  from shredded green unripe papaya , papaya has a slightly tangy flavor. The texture is crisp and firm, sometimes to the point of crunchiness. It  allows the fruit to withstand being beaten in the mortar , then topped with crushed peanuts , dried shrimps , tomatoes, thinly sliced carrots, lettuce leaves, with young long beans. Php 210 per order

The green papaya salad is an appetizer and can be shared with 3 to 4 people. MUST TRY!

Khai Luuk Khoei

Kahi Luuk Khoei or Crispy Hard Boiled Egg – The egg was boiled then coated with some batter then deep fried to perfection. crispy hard boil egg encased in a batter similar to our queck-queck but less in food color and less crusty. It goes perfect with chopped fresh vegetables, caramelized chopped onions, coriander leaves and a sweet fish sauce ( patis) Thai style. Php 170 per order

The dish can be shared with 3 to 4 people.

Bplah Pla Menk Kratien

Bplah Pla Menk Kratien or Squid with Garlic and Pepper in Soup-

The squid is cooked just right with chilies , coriander leaves, chopped lemon grass and in heavy broth.  One can add freshly chopped chili pepper to adjust the spiciness. Php 190 per serving

This yummy squid soup can be shared with 2 to 3 people.

Tom Kha Gai

Tom  Kha Gai is Chicken Soup in Coconut broth with Galangal

It is a chicken soup with coconut milk ( gata ng niyog ) and galangal ( luyang dilaw) which add kick, and straw mushrooms .  I have tasted some Tom Kha Gai but this version is somewhat watered down  . Galangals have a stronger taste than common ginger which brings out the taste of the soup . Topped with chopped coriander .  Php 190 per order

This soup can be shared with 2 to 4 people.

Gai Ob Bai Toey

 Gai Ob Bai Toey is Fried Chicken Wrapped in Pandan Leaves – The chicken is marinated with special Thai sauce and then wrapped with pandan leaves , the aroma of the pandan leaves were caught by the chicken and its taste very savory . You can smell the aromatic leaves . This dish is complimented with side garnish of chopped fresh cabbage and two kinds of condiments the sweet dark soy-sesame sauce and sweet chili sauce. MUST TRY

Php 290 per order. Good for 2 to 4 people.

Tom Yum

Tom Yum or Tom Yam  is a Lao and Thai hot and sour soup. Indeed, tom yum is characterized by its distinct hot and sour flavors, with fragrant herbs generously used in the broth. The basic broth is made of stock and fresh ingredients such as lemon grass ( tanglad) , Kaffir lime leaves – is locally called kabuyao or cabuyao ,  Galangal ( luyang dilaw) , coconut milk ( gata ng niyog), lime juice, fish sauce , crushed chili , fragrant herbs , pepper , tiger prawn, topped with chopped coriander leaves  . Some considered this as a national soup whenever you go to Thailand or Laos. A food journey is incomplete without an order of the soup! What nice about eating in Just Thai Restaurants is one can adjust the order according to one’s palate, one may request additional kaffir lime leaves or additional chillies to suit one’s palate. Php 190 per order.

The soup can be shared with 2 to 4 people.

Khao Krok Kopi

Kaho Krok Kopi or Thai Bagoong / Shrimpaste  Rice –  Thai bagoong rice  with sliced green guapple mangoes ( manibalang ) , scrambled eggs, sweet pork topped with chopped fresh chillies ,  chopped  coriander leaves as toppings .  Unlike other Thai Bagoong Rice ( shrimp paste rice) I tasted before, This rice is not salty and mildly flavored. This is a complete meal and can be shared with 2 to 4 people.  . Php 250 per serving .

Pad Thai

Pad Thai is considered as one of the national dish of Thailand . The rice noodles is stir fried with eggs, tamarind juice, chopped chilies , crushed peanuts, lime , and topped with fresh coriander leaves. I like the texture of the rice noodles and the group can enjoy mixing all the ingredients , like playing with palabok or any pancit .  Php 280  per serving . Pad Thai can be enjoyed by a group of 3 to 5 people. MUST ORDER !!!!

Gaeng Lenang

Gaeng Lenang  or Vegetable Tofu in Yellow Curry-  Tofu lovers must try this dish, It had bits of  diced carrots, eggplant, broccoli . The dish somewhat lacked the taste of curry and a bit water-down . This is a healthy dish and health conscious people must try this. Php 260 per serving . Good for 2 to 4 people.

Gai Pad Met Ma Maling

Gai Pad Met Ma Maling or Chicken with Cashew –  chicken meat with bell pepper, onion , cashew topped with chopped coriander leaves . Perfect combination, You can taste the crunchiness of the cashew and the tenderness of the chicken .  You can order with chopped chillies.

Moo Sam Cham Yary

Moo Sam Cham Yary is Grilled Pork with Tamarind Sauce. The pork is marinated in special sauce and grilled to perfection . The meat is tender and due to the nature of the tamarind paste , it enhances flavor. Php 290 per serving . Ideal for 2 to 3 people.

Crab Meat Fried Rice

Crab Meat Fried Rice is a complete meal . Crab meat with rice, vegetables , topped with fresh chopped coriander leaves. It is not salty and i like the way they cook the rice.  Php 220 per serving . Good for 2 to 4 people

Khao Niaow Ma Muang

Thai dessert made up of sticky rice topped with sweet mango slices and sesame seeds then served with coconut sauce. I prefer this Thai rendition more. It is similar with our own biko and mango or suman and mango combination. The sticky rice is cooked in coconut milk, and eating a spoonful with the sweet ripe mango slices is just heavenly, more so when you add a dollop of the coconut sauce.

The mangoes slices were presented as a kind of lotus flower. Php 260

Tha Khao

Tha Khoa or Coconut Pudding wrapped in Pandan Leaves is similar to Philippine version of Maja Blanca but with a different twist . It is wrapped in pandan leaves which add more flavor to the pudding. It is soft with some corn bits . Php 140 per order

Can be shared with 3 to 5 people.

Hot Thai Brew Coffee  Every sip was a smooth, silky and creamy coffee experience.  the brewed coffee was definitely mixed with several spices like cardamom and probably cinnamon. It also has either condensed milk or heavy cream at the bottom which blends nicely and adds some sweetness to the whole concoction upon stirring. I also like the cup , it is imported from Thailand and you can see right in front when they pour the hot water and coffee . Php 120 per serving , Ideal  for 1 or 2 persons.

 Note : The Restaurant opened its doors to the public last June 2012 and its Molito – Alabang branch last October 2012.

I must give 8.75 out of total of 10 points, This is for the ambiance, food, preparation, accessibility of the restaurant. As they say ” JUST THAI ” eating the place !!!!!

Great Asian seafood and featuring dishes inspired by the best of Thai, Malay, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Singaporean cuisines at Crustasia. This restaurant had just opened last June 29, 2018 at Newport Mall within Resort Word in Pasay City.

Crispy catfish salad with sauce is not your typical catfish salad which originated from Thailand. This is commonly called ( Yam Pla Dook Foo ). The catfish is carefully selected and carefully deep fried and neatly flaked. It is then presented with chopped red onions, sliced mangoes, coriander leaves, chopped green spring onions, pomelo,bird’s eye chilies with a slice of lemon.

Chicken satay is another MUST Try dish when you visit this restaurant. The chicken is well marinated and grilled well.  The chicken satay is topped with finely crushed peanuts and chopped spring onions.

Bagoong rice flavor is balance with with generous slices of mangoes, chopped onions, tomatoes, sliced scrambled eggs, crispy dried shrimps, marinated slices of pork ( similar to tocino) and topped with coriander leaves.  One may opt to order some red bird’s eye chilies for added kick. The combination is not too salty and this dish combines several flavors like sweetness, salty, spicy, umami and savory.

Deep fried chicken wrapped in pandan leaves – The chicken is well seasoned and wrapped in pandan leaves before deep frying. This adds more flavor and aroma to the meat. The dish is flavorful even without the sweet chilli sauce.

Steamed grouper or locally known as lapu-lapu is one of the best tasting dishes that this place had to offer. The grouper is fresh, not too salty and retained the natural taste. This was carefully seasoned with soy sauce topped with chopped onion leeks, sliced ginger.

Roasted garlic crab with noodles is another MUST TRY when hanging out . The mud crab is fresh and topped with roasted garlic and noodles.

Javanese beef rendang dish is cooked with carrots, bell pepper topped with sliced green spring onion leaves. The beef meat is tender is with thick sauce. This is best accompanied by white or jasmine rice.

Mixed seafood tom yum soup is well seasoned with clams and giant fresh water shrimp (ulang) topped with coriander leaves. The broth is savory and one can request for additional red chilies for additional spice.

Claypot catfish is cooked in Vietnamese fish sauce with lemon grass, chopped onions and topped with basil leaves. The catfish meat is tender and had no after taste. The sauce had a sweet, savory and mild taste.

Ice kacang is like our own halo-halo. This is not too sweet and can be shared with at least 2 people.

Guyabano tropical is like the ice kacang with guyabano fruit added into the ice cream. Topping like sweet corn, beans, slices of gellies, slices of cantaloupe ( melon ) adds more flavors and colors to this exciting desert.

I must recommend the kaffir leaves juice ( Cabuyao). Cabuyao is the local name for kaffir lime. The leaves and fruit is extensively used in Southeast Asian dishes.

How to commute: There are several ways on how to get there.

1.) From LRT-1 EDSA and MRT- 3 Taft station.

2.)  From MRT -3 Taft station -Try to go down the stairs at Saver’s Square at the North bound side of the station (this mall connected to the terminal) via passageway.

3.)There is a pedestrian passageway in between McDonalds and Chowking. Go straight in and look for white Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal (NAIA) 3 Loop shuttle public commuter bus. Beep Card is used in this bus and fare only cost Php 20. The buses leaves every 30 minutes.

4.) The NAIA 3 Loop shuttle commuter bus first stop is at the departure area of NAIA terminal 3, then will make a 2nd stop at the corner of the Steel Parking at Resort Dr. cor Andrews Ave. You can go down there and walk straight towards your destination.

5.) EDSA northbound lane near MRT Taft Station in Pasay Rotunda with Baclaran- “Nichols” signage. Fare ( Php 9.00 minimum)
