Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Winners Proclaimed

Miss Universe- Philippines 2020 winners and runner-ups were proclaimed few hours ago at a pre-taped telecast.

This was after more than 10 months of preliminary competition, enhanced community quarantine lock down, some candidate had dropped out due to covid 2019 and personal reasons.

Ms. Rabiya Mateo  of Iloilo City was named Miss Universe Philippines 2020 during the pageant’s pre-taped coronation ceremonies at the Baguio Country Club’s Cordillera Convention Hall over the weekend.

The almost three hour pageant was also shown in different parts of the world via youtube and television broadcast.

Ms. Ysabella Ysmael from Parañaque City bagged first runner-up honors while Ms. Michele Gumabao from Quezon City was named second runner-up.

Ms. Pauline Amelinckx from Bohol was named third runner-up while Ms.Kimberly Hakenson of Cavite was fourth runner up.   

The 22-year-old Mateo, who bested 45 other candidates, will represent the country in the 69th Miss Universe pageant, the venue and date is still to be announce.

Philippines Best National Costume Awards at the Miss Universe Pageant

The Philippines had won its second “Best in National Costume” in 25 years. This was after  host Steve Harvey announced the winner of the award while a photo of Gazini in national costume was flashed on screen during the live broadcast during the Miss Universe 2019 pageant held in Atlanta last December 8, 2019 and December 9, 2019 lcoal time in Manila.

Mr. Steve Harvey  said, “Let me explain something to you. I just read that in the teleprompter. Ya’ll got to quit doing this to me. I can read. … Now, they are trying to fix it now. See? This is what they did to me back in 2015 – played me short like that. That’s crazy.”

It was Malaysia with who was shown in the live broadcast. This created some confusion, since it was also posted at the twitter account of the Miss Universe organization.

This was later clarified after the pageant when netizens from Malaysia, Philippines complained.

In 1994 Charlene Gonzales won the country’s first award, This was inspired by three tribal groups Bagobo, Manobo and T’boli which was created by Mr. Pitoy Moreno.

This was followed in 2001, 2nd place finished by Ms. Zorayda Ruth Andam ( Maria Clara outfit, inspired by Noli Me Tangere) and top 5 finish by Gionna Cabrera ( inspired by Hispanic Filipina floral costume) both created by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza.

The national costume was inspired by the Philippine eagle , the national bird of the country was created by Cary Santiago, who also did the evening gowns of Gazini for Binibining Pilipinas 2019 and the Miss Universe competition.

There will be a trade fair , street dancing and people from all walks of life are encourage to participate . The street dancing festivities will start at the Quirino Grandstand, Manila at around past 3:00 pm and will end at the Aliw theater , Pasay City
