The beloved pontiff visited the country twice in  February 17 to 22 ,1981 and  January 12 to 16, 1995 and is fondly remembered by the Filipino faithful because of his innate charisma and the call to evangelize he imparted on both pastoral visits.

Pope John Paul’s Pontificate of almost 30 years was both long and of a historically incisive importance especially in the events that took place at the turn of the millennium. He was the pope who beatified the most number of saints, the “globe-trotter pope” and was primarily responsible for giving instant visibility to the Catholic Church. His sense of missionary responsibility took him to every corner of the earth and his ecumenical and inter-religious sensitivity endeared him to people of all faiths.

The Beatus exhibit is considered as one of the largest public collections of Pope John Paul II’s relics mounted in the country. The items come from the collections of the Loyola House of Studies, Carmelo Francisco Cortez, Dave Ceasar dela Cruz, the San Carlos Seminary, Araneta Center, Bishop Cirilo Almario , Bishop Honesto Ongkiko  and Ambassador Leonida  Vera former ambassador of the Philippines to the Holy See , among others.

Earlier on May 2011, Philippine Postal Corporation issued a commemorative 4 piece stamp and a souvenir sheet to commemorate the beatification of the Pope in Vatican.

Karol Józef Wojtyła was born in Wadowice and was the youngest of three children of Karol Wojtyła, a Polish and Emilia Kaczorowska, who is described as being of Lithuanian or Ukrianian  ancestry. His mother died on 13 April 1929, when he was eight years old. Karol’s elder sister, Olga, had died in infancy before his birth; thus, he grew close to his brother Edmund, who was 14 years his senior, and whom he nicknamed Mundek. However, Edmund’s work as a physician led to his death from scarlet fever, profoundly affecting Karol.

Celebration of Holiness

Vatican decreed his feast day would be on October 22—the anniversary of the liturgical inauguration of his papacy in 1978.

The celebration will also be highlighted by a concert dubbed “Blessed: A Call to Holiness,” to be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, where the Pope had addressed professionals, catechists and the youth during his first pontifical visit to the Philippines on Feb. 18, 1981.

The vision of the organizer  will come full circle on October 29, 2011 with the free festive concert filled with music and inspiring testimonials to culminate a three-week celebration.
