Affordable Dishes at Kusina de Maria in New York, Cubao

Kusina de Maria just recently opened their business to the general public last February 9, 2019. The hole in wall type restaurant’s named after the wife of the proprietor. Our host told us, whenever her aunt is mad at her, she would be called “Maria.” instead of Marianne.  Business partners includes Mr. Joseph Talucod, Mr. Emman Talucod and wife.

The restaurant is just a few blocks away from the iconic Araneta Center and near three provincial bus stations. People living within the area would still refer this as  Juan Love Pet Store. ( which is the only pet store in New York Avenue for a number of years). The proprietors decided to change their business and moved the operations in Murphy, Cubao area.

Sitting capacity of the restaurant is just between 10 to 12 people at any given time. While waiting for your dishes to be served, One can play traditional board games like chess , scrabble, tic tac toe and dama.

Nachos– Serve with chopped onions, chopped tomatoes ,ground meat and grated cheese toppings. One can add a few bucks if they wanted to add more onions, tomatoes and bell pepper.

When it comes to cleanliness, we would consider several factor like freshness of ingredients and handling of foods. Some of the dishes are deeply guarded specialties. while others are self taught recipes commonly seen in cook books, youtube or blogging sites.

Chicken Buffalo Wings– This is best paired with rice. It had the right amount of sweetness and a little kick of spiciness. The chicken coated with batter then deep fried before a glaze is added. One of the best chicken wings in this side of the city.

Hidden Wings Honey Barbecue

Hidden Wings Honey Barbecue– This is one of my favorite fried chicken wings, this had some sesame seed toppings with nice balance of sweet, savory, spicy and crunchiness.

Hidden Wings Super Spicy

Hidden Wings Super Spicy – I personally like the super spicy version ( but not too spicy for my taste buds). This is good pairing with beer or any ice cold drinks.

Hidden Wings Garlic Parmesan

Hidden Wings Garlic Parmesan – The fried chicken wings were coated with a nice combination of garlic flavor and parmesan cheeese. It does not have strong garlic after taste. It also had good balance of salty and one can still savor the taste and smell of parmesan cheese.

Hidden Wings Spicy Cheese– One can taste the cheese flavoring with hint of some spice coming from sliced chilies.

Kabasig- combination of bagnet and sisig

Kabasig– This dish is good in any meals or finger food. The meat is crunchy with some chopped onions ,chopped banana chilies topped cream. Unlike other sisig dishes, calamansi flavor is already infused in the dish.

Mais con Yelo

Mais con Yelo– not too sweet with the right balance combination of shaved ice, cream of corn and evaporated milk. Price is not bad for small ones which cost Php 15.00 ( small cup).

Food Delivery Service

According to the proprietors, They are currently in negotiation for food delivery service within the area.

We must say that one can find good food, good place and affordable price in Cubao, Quezon City.

Note: The restaurant is planning to expand its operations in the next few months. There are also plans for opening more branches in the coming months.

Second Wave of RETRO Convention 2019 at Ali Mall

Retro Convention (RetroCon)2019 second wave had another successful trade fair, exhibit and show held at the iconic Ali Mall from March 30 and 31, 2019. This was organized by the same team behind the popular HistoryCon and supported by management of Ali Mall and Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City.

First Wave

The first wave was held last March 22 to 24 with Binibining Pilipinas 2019 candidates and Araneta Center management were on site to meet and greet their well wishers and collectors. The first wave also pave way for the reopening of ALI X, Ali Mall’s new wing that is home to all things vintage that are for sale.

We would remember that some of the old time serious collectors would have stalls, hosted swap- meets and hang-out area (tambayan) within Ali Mall.

Mr. Elmer Padilla (Boy Tsinelas)

Mr. Elmer Padilla is more popularly known as “Boy Tsinelas“. He originally hailed from Catbalogan City in Samar province and decided to relocate to Imus, Cavite province in order to seek better pasture. He started to craft some well loved action figures by using old flip-flops as a medium to makes both ends meet.

He caught a netizen’s attention and posted his photos on Facebook, and was reposted in several pages around September 2017.

His crafts were presented to Mr. Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) an action figure from Filipino artist Elmer Padilla – Thor star Chris Hemsworth got one as well.

There were at least 50 table bourse dealers with different kinds of unique items ranging from old magazines, photos, banknotes, coins, wood carvings, stamps, first day covers, antiques, tin robots, kewpie dolls, tektite, car plate numbers, soft drink bottles, stuff toys, game consoles, comics, books, rosaries, emphameras among other stuffs.

Another highlight are the different comic artists and on the spot sketching activities. Unlike other events, It is open to the general public and there were no entrance fees!

Hotel Sogo has been in the hospitality industry for 25 years. Its first ever branch is near the station of LRT Monumento, Caloocan that opened in February of 1993.
