EDSA People Power Vintage Postcards

Epifanio de los Santos Avenue or acronym called EDSA. The highway stretches about 23.8 kilometers (14.8 miles) and traverses major Metro Manila towns and cities like Caloocan, Quezon City, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati and Pasay.

This multi view photo postcard with yellow border was among the most popular postcard sold and was out of stock just few months after this was release. The reason was the yellow border which associate the new regime.

EDSA History

EDSA used to be called Avenida 19 de Junio from 1946 to early 1950’s then Highway 54 from the mid- 1950 to 1959. On April 7, 1959, De los Santos’ birthday, Republic Act No. 2140. It was then referred to as Epifanio de los Santos Avenue or EDSA since then.

It was at the Ortigas corner EDSA which is near Camp Crame and Camp Aguinaldo where the popular four day uprising from February 22–25, 1986. There was a sustained campaign of civil resistance against regime. There were at least several hundreds of thousands to more than 2 million people which went to the 4 day peaceful rally.

It with triumph of the peaceful revolution, Popular National Bookstore printed postcards while other smaller bookstore soon followed. This was popular items send to postcard / deltiologist in different parts of the world.

There were at least a dozen or so multi-view photos per postcard, While there were also single photo postcard which captured the people en mass.

Some local deltiologists and souvenir sellers quickly capitalized the newly released people power stamps issued by PHLPOST and sell them on tourists, deltiologists and maximum philately collectors from all parts of the globe.

The new administration of President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino together with Vice President Salvador “Doy’ Laurel were featured in the 4 pieces set of stamps (60 centavos – quantities: 1,000,000, 1.20 pesos- quantities: 1,000,000, 2.40- quantities: 641,500 and 3.00 pesos -quantities: 1,000,000 ) and a souvenir sheet stamp ( Php 7.20)quantities -50,000. The stamps also comes within presentation folder, which had a premium and first day issue with different cache designs.

First Day Cover had -Makati cancellation, Camp Crame cancellation, with another variation Makati and Camp Crame cancellation. The stamps and first day cover were printed by APO Neda Printing Company. The used stamps were sold at much cheaper price compared to the mint one.

2021 marked the 35th anniversary of the peaceful change of power with postcards and stamps serves as reminder of the not so distant history.

EDSA People Power :Popularity of Postcards

EDSA People Power postcards during the 1980’s up to early part of 2000 were sold in many bookstore and was used for different purposes. It was used for school projects by students of both private and public schools in their Social Studies, Araling Panlipunan, History, Humanities,Political Science among other subjects. It was reprinted several times and sold en mass by some bookstores in Divisoria and sold in the provinces.

However it is not somewhat rare to find EDSA 1986 People Power postcards even in local stamp bourse, curio stores and online auction sites.

2nd Hamster Fair

Philippine Hamster Owners Society (PHOS) in partnership with Star Mall  EDSA Shaw-Mandaluyong and JuanLovePets Store will be having their 2nd Hamster Fair to be schedule from June 17 and 18 , 2017 mall hours.

Organic Food Bowl Night Market at Centris

(AANI), Go Organic Philippines, Intercontinental Network of Organic Farmers Organizations (INOFO), Philippine Development Assistance Program, Inc. (PDAP), Kasama Ka Organik Cooperative, Aquarius Agricultural Source Corporation (AASCORP), Magsasaka at Siyentipiko para sa Pag-unlad ng Agrikutura (MASIPAG), the natural farming advocates under the Philippine Natural Farming, Inc. (PNFI), Organic na Negros Organic Producers and Retailers Association (ONOPRA), biodynamic farms under the Agrikultura Natural, Inc. (ANI) Mo, Cosmic Farm of Benguet State University, La Trinidad, the Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) under the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the Agribusiness Marketing Assistance Service of the Department of Agriculture (DA-AMAS). The Food Bowl will be launched at the ETON Centris Walk, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City starting March 18. It will open every Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 12mn. ETON Centris Walk is directly under the stop of the Quezon Avenue MRT Station with a commercially accessible area and ample parking for the target institutional buyers.

Paint Araneta Yellow

Last  February 25, 2010 –the 24th anniversary of EDSA People Power revolution and together with  the spirit of EDSA People Power volunteers  had gathered the supporters and friends  at the Araneta Coliseum. The gathering was held from  2 PM to 8 PM. Some of the volunteer groups arrived as early as 8 AM  .   LP standard bearer Senator Benigno ” Noynoy”  Aquino III and Senator Manuel  Roxas together with their senatorial slate,  led the people in reliving EDSA and rededicating ourselves to fulfilling the unfinished promise of EDSA.

Thousands of volunteers from all parts of the Philippines and the world had gathered in this momentous occasion. Our group was composed by the volunteers of Tuloy Pinoy and the Spirit of People Power Movement.


There are also enterprising people selling various items from button pins, Cory and Ninoy memorabilia’s, stickers, caps  , wrist band , t-shirt, cellphone ,  among others.

Celebrity power

The event was attended by several celebrities who appeared in Aquino’s campaign advertisements. Celebrity singers Ogie Alcasid, Noel Cabangon, Jim Paredes, Christian Bautista and local band Spongecola performed during the event and led the audience in chanting songs that expressed support to Aquino.

Composer Ryan Cayabyab played EDSA 1 staples “Bayan Ko and “Impossible Dream” towards the end of the gathering.

Yellow confetti rained inside the venue during the performance. Actor Dingdong Dantes, who spoke to the crowd before Aquino’s speech, said he refused an offer to endorse another candidate because he believed his “principle” cannot be paid.

After the speech, members of the LP led the nearly packed coliseum—which accommodated some  20,000—and several thousands more outside the venue in pledging: “Noynoy, ibinibigay namin sa iyo ang lakas ng People Power. Hindi ka mag-iisa sa labang ito.”

Also present during the event was Noynoy’s girlfriend, Valenzuela Councilor Shalani Soledad. LP vice-presidential bet, Sen. Manuel Roxas II, and the party’s entire senatorial slate also showed their support for Aquino during the event.

Prominent personalities were also present to join the celebration like Aquino’s running mate, Senator Mar Roxas II, Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte , former Quezon City Mayor Jun Simon , Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, former Manila Mayor Mel Lopez, and members of Aquino’s senatorial slate.

This is the first time that the country commemorated the  historic bloodless revolution without  Noynoy Aquino’s mother, the late President Corazon Aquino, who was extolled as an icon of people power. The former leader died of colon cancer in August 1, 2009 .

Fireworks display delighted the people around the area  ,  a small concert was held on the grounds of Araneta Coliseum parking grounds  .
