6 Important Highlights of TernoCon 2018 in SM Clark, Pampanga

TernoCON 2018 open with a big splash in the activity area of SM Clark field in Pampanga province. The terno exhibit covers 28 finalists and winners at the recently held TernoCon competition in 2018.

It also coincide with “Buwan ng Wika” month of August where promotion of Filipino language, arts and culture is emphasized.

Preparation

From May 8-10, 2018 a mentoring and preparatory workshop was conducted at the CCP. The Project’s Artistic Director Gino Gonzales together with Ternocon Chief Mentor Inno Sotto, regional mentors JC Buendia (Luzon), Cary Santiago (Visayas), and Len Cabili (Mindanao) shared their respective philosophies and design processes with 30 participants.

6.) Promotion of Philippine Ternos– Ternos which is an epitome of modern Filipina takes it roots from Pre-hispanic era, Spanish colonial era, American, Japanese and post war era.

Terno” was derived from the English word for “matching,” or ” to match”  has evolved over centuries. The dress also evolve from one colonial master to another. According to some fashion authorities, the design was from the baro’t saya and through the decades saw it innovative designs and modern interpretations, whether in structure, materials, or coloration evolving into what we see today.

5.) Use of of Indigenous Weaves or Textiles– Several of the terno on display use regional, local fabrics like abaka, jusi, abel iloko even old rags were use in making terno and evening gown.

4.) Collaborative Efforts – several well known companies, designers and cultural groups like  Slim’s Fashion and Arts School, Steven Tan of SM-MOA, SM Super Malls, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Bench and celebrities worked to make this project highly successful.

3.) Mentorship – Well known Filipino fashion designers like J.C Buendia, Inno Sotto, Cary Santiago and Len Cabili  who serves as mentor for the new designers on how to create a beautiful work of art.

2.) New Designs–  Twenty-eight designers were finally chosen and asked to create one cocktail version of a balintawak and one formal evening terno each as entries to the competition.  Unlike the old terno, all the terno exhibited at the TernoCon 2018 were design and created by these new generation of artist.

1.) Home Grown Talent– Mr. Marlon Tuazon which won the “GOLD” award, hails from the province of Pampanga. This is like a homecoming exhibition for the Kapampangan artist as well as many of designers who hails from this region.

TernoCon 2018 exhibit is from August 2 to 9, 2019 at the Activity Area of SM Clarkfield, Pampanga province. Do not miss this exhibit. There are no entrance fees and one will be proud to see the modern design concept by these artists.

The well-known design Mak Tumang revealed that he made seven sketches, four prototypes and three gowns with the help of 16 artisans for Catriona’s evening gown.

The gowns, he said, took 2,712 hours of “fastidious process” to create, using over a million pesos worth of materials.

Kasuotang Pilipino Fashion Show

The city government of Makati through its Museum and Cultural Affairs Office (MCAO) will be staging this year’s Kasuotang Pilipino fashion show on September 23 at 6:00pm at the Glorietta 2 Activity Center.
Mayor Abby Binay expressed full support for the said event, which has become an annual event showcasing the creations of local designers to promote Filipino fashion representing the islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. “We fully support the event as it offers an opportunity for the people, especially the youth, to have a better appreciation of Filipino fashion that denotes our rich cultural heritage.
At the same time, it serves as a venue for Makati-based fashion designers to share their ingenuity and distinctive style and receive the recognition they deserve,” Binay said. Meanwhile, MCAO head May Santillana in a statement said that it has become a tradition in the city to stage the event in line with the nationwide celebration of “Linggo ng Kasuotang Pilipino”. “The staging of Kasuotang Pilipino has become a much-anticipated event in Makati every September.

The fashion show will  features the beautiful creations of talented Makati-based designers worn and modeled by city officials, senior citizens, and friends from the international community and the private sector,” Santillana said. Kasuotang Pilipino 2016 will showcase the creations of 14 designers, all Makati-based. They are Therese Andaya, Albert Andrada, Niño Angeles, Ronaldo Arnaldo, Joel Bautista, Janet Castro, Noel Crisostomo, Frankie de Leon, Luis delos Santos, Albert Figueras, Jinggo Inoncillo, Kaye Morales, Raymund Saul, and Val Taguba.
For Luzon, the creations will be modelled by wives of diplomats, namely, Eloisa Klecheski, wife of the deputy chief of mission, United States Embassy; Anjana Hasper, wife of the charge d’affaires, German Embassy; Souddavone Khaykhampithoune, wife of the ambassador, Embassy of Laos; Monthip Upatising, wife of the ambassador, Royal Thai Embassy, Sylvia Tay-Van Remoortele, wife of the ambassador, Royal Belgian Embassy; Dr. Kieu Phung, wife of the ambassador, Royal Danish Embassy; and Wang Qi Jessen, wife of the ambassador, European Union Embassy.

The Ermita Malate Business Owners Association ( EMBOA) Flores de Ermita Parada ng mga Sagala and the Kasuotang Pilipino Fashion Show is taking a giant leap forward showcasing the annual Flores de Ermita event with young fashion designers of the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines . This is the second year that the group is staging their event.

This year’s parade of carriage and mini-fashion show begun at the historic Manila Hotel and ends at Robinson’s Place-Manila .

After the presentation , The models rode horse drawn carriages ( kalesas and karetelas) to Remedios Circle for another photo opportunity at the Remedios Circle.Park. The park is neatly manicured with newly planted palms and ornamental plants.

The Remedios Circle fountain serves as a focal point for the urban renewal and beautification program of the organization and the city of Manila.  The mood is very festive with upbeat Caribbean street band and cheerful children .

The mission of EMBOA of positive image , pride of the place remains strong and they are proud of renewal agenda for the residents, arts , cultural promotion , good neighborhood and business partnership in making stronger alliances with city government and various stakeholders for the revival of Ermita-Malate as a tourism destination . The author had a chance to get invited in one of their community outreach project last year.

Junior New System group was founded in 2009 which gives a new twist to the hip-hop dance in Sampaloc ( District 4 ) of Manila . They are best known as one of the finalists at the recent Asia’s Got Talent feat held last year in Singapore .

A short press conference was held at the Ibarras at the nearby Padre Faura street. The event started with a little intimate conversation with some of the brand ambassadors and a sing and dance number performed by the teenage group UPGRADE and a song rendered by Mr. Richard  Poon .
