State of Cockfighting and Fancy Chicken Breeding in the Philippines

Cockfighting in the Philippines is worth more than Php 50 Billion industry ! .  This does not include breeding fancy chickens for pet and food  ( like bantams, serama, silkie chicken , cochin ,  frizzle , parawakan )   poultry industry for eggs and meat in which big name commercial feeds and multi-national companies.

Dr. Poul Tagama , a  multiplier ( breeder)  like bantam, serama, silkie  and other chicken breeds  told the crowd during the seminar conducted last March 2014 at the 68th annual orchid and fancy chicken show held at the Quezon Memorial Circle estimates that some feed companies are starting to show some interest at the fancy breeds .  Industry experts estimates that fancy chicken breeds use of vitamins , feeds and specialized grains that may take account from 10% to as much as 25% of the poultry industry.  A lot of fancy chicken breeds are just taken cared -off within the confine of a small backyard  and requiring only minimal space .

Aside from fancy chicken raising, The cockfighting industry helps millions of people from all walks of life from breeder, caretaker, cockpit arena, feed producer, trainer, veterinary clinics .  Now,  it is also becoming a tourism potential with several local tour operators conducting local tours in cockpit arena and during cockfighting days.

I remembered conducting a tour to  a small group of local tourists and 2 French film makers Messieurs Francois Caron and Frederic Bussiere  . We organized a tour last March 2, 2014 ( AGORA WALK) which started in Luneta Park,  A. Bonifacio Avenue, Statue of Legazpi and Urdaneta , Ninoy , Cory and Cardinal Sin, Juan Luna , Puerta Real gardens , General Luna street , San Agustin Church , Casa Manila , Manila Cathedral before ending our tour within a small cockfighting arena within Intramuros .

We remembered that the entrance fee was very cheap and they experienced first hand on how Filipinos enjoy this as a national past-time. We also ate at the nearby- carinderia, Before they went to other parts of Manila.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has been successful in its campaign for animal welfare worldwide. It scored string of victories, including the final outlawing of cockfighting in the United States.

Now it has set its eye on doing the same to cockfighting in the Philippines.

Cockfighting or sabong is a multi-billion peso industry . In the Philippines an archipelago country with a population of some 100 million. It is estimated that roughly 10 percent of country’s adult male population is involved with the sabong industry. That is about 8 to 10 million people !

Ninety five percent (95%) of the about 1,500 provinces, cities and municipalities or Local Government Units (LGUs) have at least one cockpit. The bigger LGUs have two, three or more cockpits in their respective localities as the law provides that the number of cockpits a certain LGU may allow, depends on that particular LGU’s population.

A 12 thousand-strong association of Filipino cock fighting association ( sabungeros)  has formally filed with the Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for recognition as a non-stock, non-profit corporation to be known as Masang Nagmamanok (MANA) Inc.

The primary objective of MANA is to provide welfare to and promote the interest of the common sabungeros. The fight for the preservation of cockfighting in the country is a collateral but inherent responsibility in pursuit of its primary objective.

Masang Nagmamanok (MANA) started as a nationwide movement of ordinary sabungeros, mostly small time cockers, backyard breeders and workers in the gamefowl industry– the common sabungeros. Now it is counting as members the raisers of any kind of chicken, whether for sabong, eggs or meat production.
