It was supposed to be a more comprehensive tour which also involves some historical houses , schools and museums on September 26 but some of the houses around Quiapo had some events and San Sebastian Basilica had a wedding  on that day so majority of the participants decided to move the date of the tour to mid- February 2016 .

FEU cheerleaders and dancers- October 3

I decided not to cancel the event due to the request made by some cause oriented groups , students ( case study ) , bloggers and other NGO groups. However due to monsoon rains  and UAAP cheerdance competition , only a handful participants managed to come to the walking tour .

This is the original drawing designed in 1881 by Spanish engineer Genaro Palacios, a good friend of the Augustinian Recollects. He envisioned a steel church to withstand Manila’s earthquakes and was made possible by the advancements of the 2nd Industrial Revolution. Today it remains the Philippines’ ONLY all-metal building.

 San Sebastian Basilica

The church was raised to the status of a minor basilica by Pope Leo XII  on June 24, 1890. When it was finished a year later  on August 16, 1891, the Basílica Menor de San Sebastián was consecrated by Bernardino Nozaleda y Villa OP , the 25th Archibishop of Manila . It was the first Basilica consecrated in the country .

The Foundation has ties with many international parties,They also have local friends like the Escuela Taller, a trade school in Intramuros that trains out-of-school youth in traditional building methods used in the preservation of heritage sites.

The Basilica is on its 10- year restoration .  The foundation carefully considers every repair and intervention, because they know that everything they di will affect the building decades from now. By careful research, testing, documentation, design and mock-ups, its architects, engineers, conservators, historians and metallugists hope to extend the lifespan of the building. In the team’s study, they found many well-intentioned repairs that did short-term good, but long-term damage.

This is another rare jewel of the Basilica – unfortunately – It is not in working order.

rust

This is one of the major problems that is plaguing the steel basilica

We manage to get some of the awesome view on top of the church belfry,

The team has found, for example, that a small set of cement repairs on all columns is now causing the extensive damage that will cost millions to repair. So far it is on its 3rd year and more volunteers and donations are required .

Germany Won its Fourth World Cup Title !

Maracanã Stadium , RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil

With two quick, deft touches, Mario Goetze ended Germany’s 24-year wait for another World Cup title — and denied Messi the one title he needs to forever take his place among the game’s all-time greats.

Goetze scored the winning goal in extra time to give Germany a 1-0 victory over Argentina on Sunday in a tight and tense World Cup final that was decided by one moment of brilliance.

It is Germany’s first World Cup title as a unified nation, having won as West Germany in 1954, 1974 and 1990.

Maracanã stadium

The Germans faced Argentina in both the 1986 and 1990 finals, during  Diego Maradona’s heyday.

Goetze, who wasn’t born when West Germany beat Argentina in the 1990 final, controlled a cross with his chest in the 113th minute and in one fluid motion volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Sergio Romero and inside the far post from five yards out.

It was a goal that gave Germany its fourth World Cup title, equal second with Italy on the list of all-time champions and just behind Brazil’s five.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. I don’t know how to describe it. You just shoot that goal in, you don’t really know what’s happening,” Goetze said. “And then at the end of the match, having a party with the team, the whole country … it is for us, a dream come true.”

At the final whistle, Germany players fell into a pile in the middle of the pitch in celebration. Messi walked past them with his hands on his hips — still in the shadow of his compatriot Diego Maradona, who led his country to the 1986 title.

Goetze went on as a substitute for Miroslav Klose toward the end of regulation time and his fresh legs made the difference.

Andre Schuerrle broke down the left flank, sending his cross into the area, and the Bayern Munich midfielder did the rest with a clinical finish. The goal echoed that of Andres Iniesta four years ago, when the midfielder scored in similar fashion but from the other side of the area to give Spain a 1-0 extra-time win over the Netherlands.

According to Germany coach Joachim Loew, it was exactly as he’d planned when he made the substitution.

“I said to Mario Goetze, ‘OK, show to the world that you’re better than Messi and you can decide the World Cup. You have all the possibilities to do that,'” Loew said. “I had a good feeling with him.”

Germany became the first European team to win a World Cup in the Americas, and the victory ends a string of near misses since winning its last major title at the 1996 European Championship. The team lost the 2002 World Cup final to Brazil, the Euro 2008 final to Spain and was eliminated in the semifinals in both 2006 and 2010.

Germany had entered the game as the favorite after its 7-1 semifinal drubbing of Brazil. But Argentina proved to be an entirely different proposition.

 Lineups:

Germany: Manuel Neuer; Philipp Lahm, Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng, Benedikt Hoewedes; Christoph Kramer (Andre Schuerrle, 31), Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, Mesut Ozil (Per Mertesacker, 120), Thomas Mueller; Miroslav Klose (Mario Goetze, 88).

Argentina: Sergio Romero; Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Demichelis, Ezequiel Garay, Marcos Rojo; Lucas Biglia, Javier Mascherano, Enzo Perez (Fernando Gago, 86); Ezequiel Lavezzi (Sergio Aguero, 46), Gonzalo Higuain (Rodrigo Palacio, 78), Lionel Messi.

It was in 1912 when he put up the first KRAUT stained glass studio in Bilibid Viejo, Quiapo. This was where he met, and eventually married, the lovely Pilar Gonzalez. Before long, Matthias was selling a novel decorative concept: interiors planned not just paints, but colorful windows as well.

Baba Plastic Pot Company exhibit booth at the WorldBex 2011

According to one of the  booth managers  , Materials used  in producing its pot are environment friendly , noting that non-recycled plastic is used in making their line of pots and gardening utensils.  Some of their  plastic pots are exported to Middle Eastern countries where there is extreme temperature fluctuations and heat from the sun may cause other plastic pots in the market to fade their colors and even break .   “The other brand faded in a matter of months when exposed to sunlight,” she notes, “while Baba’s retained its color.”Their pots can withstand extreme temperature from negative  17C to 48C.

grey and terracotta colored plastic planting boxes

The company has over 50 copyright protected designs of its polypropylene plastic pots. The pots, previously unadorned and sporting the terracotta like color  pots, are now hand-coated to resemble stone and are painted to match furniture. The company also came up with “drop-in” pots, hole-less decorative pots that serve as shells for potted plants and which help decorators change the look of a plant without the need for re-potting.

“You can tell by looking closely at the item.  If you see black flecks on it, it means that it used recycled plastic,” she reveals, noting that Baba’s plastic items do not have such a characteristic.
