Nostalgia Behind Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Commemorative Stamps and Covers

Sesame street is a children television program which marked their 50th anniversary with the launching of commemorative stamps, first day covers as part of their golden anniversary.

Sesame street debuted on November 10, 1969 in the United States and in approximately 115 countries. There were 16 sesame street muppets which were featured in the sheetlet or pane which is still being retailed for $17.49 in Amazon online site and $7.51 shipping cost in any parts of the United States.

This was sold at a slightly cheaper rate by the United States Postal Service. Each self-adhesive non-denominated (55¢) stamp in the Sesame Street set highlights one prominent Muppet character from the show, with a photographic portrait against a white background during the launching way back in June 22, 2019.

Mr. Jim Henson and the Muppets commemorative pane of 11 37¢ stamps (Scott 3944) released in 2005, featuring many characters made famous on The Muppet Show which ran from 1976 to 1981. issued in 2005 feature 10 characters.

50th Anniversary of Sesame Street

The 50th anniversary of the sesame street stamp pane ( sheetlet) featured the well- loved characters of Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, Rosita, The Count, Oscar the Grouch, Abby Cadabby, Herry Moster, Julia, Guy Smiley, Snuffleupagus, Elmo, Telly, Grover, & Zoe. There were 62 million stamps printed or 3,875,000 per design.

Art director Derry Noyes designed the stamps. Arranged in horizontal rows, the stamps showcase 16 of the characters that appear on Sesame Street. Images of nine of the characters appear on the right side of the pane underneath the iconic Sesame Street sign. The back of the pane displays the Sesame Street 50th anniversary artwork.

Sesame street was shown for several years in GMA channel 7. In the recent years, re-runs are still shown in different cable, HBO, youtube channel still capture the imagination and adding educational awareness among children.

There are 16 first day covers ( an envelope with cache design, post mark and a stamp which feature a sesame street characters.

I lost no time to contact my cousin based in the United States to pre-order and glad that he was able buy some sesame street first day cover and sheetlets va USPS. It took almost 2 years before i got to see the actual stamps and fdc of sesame street. Maraming Salamat po !

PHLPOST Issues President Corazon Aquino Second Series Floral Paintings with Scent Stamps

The Philippine Postal Corporation in observance of former President Corazon ” Cory ” Aquino sixth death anniversary on August 1, A second series of special scented stamps which depicted her lifeworks on her favorite subject matter ” flowers ” was finally launched on July 29, 2015 at the Boracay Room of Hotel Sofitel in Pasay City.

There was a small gallery of stamps and first day covers from the past issuance of PHLPOST. There were 11 such stamps that depicted President Corazon Aquino from 1986 People Power stamps to the current scented paintings on stamps.

As her duties in Malacañang Palace ended in 1992 , a new journey for President Corazon Aquino was invited by a group of friends to join a painting class. She hesitated because , she said, she could not even draw. Ms. Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, the eldest child of Cory and the late senator Benigno Aquino Jr. prodded her mother to pursue painting.

” I told her , Come on mom, they’ll make nice gifts’ . It’s not so much the painting but the one who painted it. A painting is also something that you can leave to your children ; it becomes a treasure . Because of my persistence , she finally gave in , ” Ballsy told SELYO ( official magazine of PHLPOST )  in an interview.

A GIFT that MONEY Cannot BUY :

Cory would paint on different surfaces and materials including trays , flat stones , porcelain, canvas and even bags. Painting relaxed her, and it brought her closer to her family. Soon she became enamored with the craft , Cory started giving them away her paintings as gifts to family members, close friends, colleagues in politics and wedding godchildren.

According to Ms. Deedee Siytangco, They received their first and only painting by Cory in 1999 when her daughter Ms.Sandeee Marasigan , gave birth to daughter Amanda on January 24- which also was the birthday of Cory Aquino .

The event is well covered by major television station and broad sheet like Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin and Philippine Daily Inquirer. I am quite lucky together with Ms. Jimmy Ang ( APO Philatelic Society ) to have the privilege to cover the event .

She served as Metrobank Foundation chairperson in our board of advisers from 1993 until the time of her demise.  The foundation had purchased Php 100,000 worth of stamps and First Day Covers.

Another prominent figure , Brunei royalty , invited Cory to visit even after her presidency . ” She brought him , ” Your Majesty , I know you can buy anything you want but I’m into painting now and I thought I’d give you something that’s not for sale.” She presented him with her painting. They were pleased , and it made mom happy” This was according to Ms. Ballsy Aquino -Cruz. recalled.

Cory’s subjects revolved around faces, landscapes, rosaries and most notably flowers.Her favorite subject was flowers. People would say , Your mom really likes flowers ! Yes, she did but she always said she painted flowers because it was the only thing she could paint” ! Ms. Ballsy Aquino -Cruz recalled.

Five different paintings of ” Tita Cory” is included at the special block of 4 stamp and a souvenir sheet. About 400,000 copies in four design of the special scented stamps is printed using imported unwatermarked paper and floral scented ink.  PHLPOST has also printed 50,000 copies of the souvenir sheet at Php 120 each plus 12% VAT.

There was the parade of storm troopers by Philippine 501 , The 501st Legion is a worldwide Star Wars costuming organization comprised of and operated by Star Wars fans. While it is not sponsored by Lucasfilm Ltd., it is Lucasfilm’s preferred Imperial costuming group. Star Wars, its characters, costumes, and all associated items are the intellectual property of Lucas film.

Mr. Mark Cerezo  loves toys and anime – according to him , He would use recycled plastics, rubber and other items from the leftovers of shoe factories in Marikina . He also had a group called ” Pinoy Malikhain ” which gives FREE puppet shows to indigent communities in Marikina and other areas.  He is also called ” Rubber Artist”  of Marikina City and he had been in many part of the world because of his unique cosplay character costumes ! He was  featured in a commercial of a well -known energy drink  which salutes Filipino Modern Heroes .

It was my first time as a writer/ blogger  to join the country’s longest-running environmental awareness concert for Mother Earth, Earth Day Jam, stages a brand-new environmental campaign, bringing on the critical global climate change issue straight to public’s doorstep. The FREE public concert started in Subic , Zambales as a small gathering of artists and environmental advocates 12 years ago.

Since then, the event had grown bigger with several host cities like ( Tomas Morato street)  Quezon City,  SM MOA – Pasay  and Fort Bonifacio Global City .

The last time that i was able to join the Earth Day Jam  sometime in 2005  when the concert was held  in Tomas Morato street  in Quezon City. The concert started at around past 7:00pm . The  crowd swell to more than 6,000 by the time the concert started .

Department of Environment and Natural Resources ( DENR ) advocacy booth gave away FREE tree saplings for those who are interested in planting  tree seedlings in their backyard . The officials from the agency also gave away interesting leaflets , posters and booklets on how to save mother nature and the environment .
