Special Guest Mayor Joy Belmonte at 73rd Mid-Year Orchid Show

Honorable Josefina “Joy” Belmonte -Alimurung together with Honorable Candy Medina- Atienza (councilor 6th district), Assistant administrator Attorney Lord, Engineer Zaldy Dela Rosa, Quezon Memorial Circle administration staff, affiliated plant societies, invited guests, media, social media bloggers and Philippine Orchid Society members, were treated to a grand ribbon cutting, a tour of the exhibit area and opening of the 73rd mid- year orchid and festival 2019.

Opening was held late afternoon past 4:00 pm within Hardin ng Bulaklak ( HB/ Garden of Joy/ Flower Garden) the exhibits highlighted the blooming of several varieties of waling-waling  or Vanda/ Euanthe sanderiana which is the highlight of the festival.

It is good that there were some blooming Waling-waling during this time of the year since rainy season started a little bit late.

It is also good that table judging for flowering orchids were introduce during this show. This will enable orchid hobbyists and the general public to appreciate the orchid competition winners up close. Most international orchid shows normally present their orchids that way.

The mayor also delighted the crowd with her three good news which were delivered during her speech after the ribbon cutting ceremonies held within Quezon City Memorial Circle in Quezon City.

73rd Mid Year Orchid Show Daily Schedule

The Philippine Orchid Society will be having the 73rd mid-year orchid and garden show. This year’s theme is “Orchid Festival” which showcase the beautiful, endemic, rare and even the common orchid species blooming this time of the year.

The 73rd mid-year orchid show will have a daily lectures or talks starting on August 30 to September 9, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the gazebo area within Hardin ng mga Bulaklak ( Flower Garden) within Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City.

There are also trade fair booths, orchid competition, ornamental plant competition.

Entrance fees is Php 30.00 for the general public and Php 20.00 for students, senior citizens and person with disabilities with valid identification card.

For those who needed a “Certificate of Attendance ” or “Certificate of Participation” during the talks/ demonstration. There is a minimum fee collected for printing of the certificate.

Highlights of the Flora Filipina 2019 Opening

Flora Filipina 2019 which is a project by the Philippine Orchid Society in partnership with Quezon City government, Department of Tourism, Department of Agriculture with media partner Manila Bulletin had a grand opening held at the Hardin ng mga Bulaklak ( Flower Garden) area within Quezon Memorial Circle.

The opening was capped with a ribbon cutting ceremony around past 4:00 pm. Lion dancers with drum beaters paving a post Chinese New Year vibe at the opening.

There were cultural performers dancing popular Filipino folk dances. International delegates, members, invited guests were serenaded with Filipino music.

Allied Botanical Corporation or simply called ABC presented a beautiful landscape exhibit using their popular flowering annuals, marigolds and sunflowers.

The landscape exhibits have several flowering gerberas, marigolds, aglaonemas, tropical foliages, Phalaenopsis hybrid orchids, Rhyncostylis gigantea, strap leaf vandas, Dendrobiums and BLC type hybrids.

This landscape exhibit showcases several variegated agaves, tillandsias and succulent plants. This landscape carefully used some upscale material from old wooden window panels, and utility poles among others.

Mrs. Evangeline ” Vangie” Go orchid landscape exhibit booth won several awards. The award also includes ” Best Orchid Landscape ” award.

The orchid landscape exhibit included different orchid species and hybrids. Among the gorgeous blooming  Dendrobium anosmum ( sanggumays), Vanda lamellata,   Vanda lamellata var. boxallii, yellow and reddish flowering cattleya hybrids, strap leaf vandas. oncidiums and Epidendrums hybrids.

Grammatophyllum multiflorum variety citrinum have hundreds of greenish yellow flowers that is a big head turner at the landscape exhibit area.

The accents included old capiz window panels, wooden doors and old ceramic vases.

The orchid landscape exhibit also use some old drift woods finished with bermuda grass and white pebbles.

This orchid landscape exhibit was executed by Ms. Rona Latorre use different kinds of strap leaf vandas, oncidiums, cattleyas, Phalaenopsis orchids, ferns and old logs. This won third place in the orchid landscape exhibit.

This landscape exhibit was executed by Mr. Rudy T. Mintarto, Mr.Bagus Asharnanto and Mr.Win. They used several cut-flower orchid varieties, wooden face mask, head gear and costumes from Indonesia.

Mr. Godofredo ” Fred” Salud is the person behind this award winning “Best Ornamental Landscape” exhibit booth. He is also the person behind the Solaire Resort and Casino gorgeous lobby landscape.

The plants included some Paphiopedilum haynaldianum with dozens of flowers, Dischidias, bromeliads,anthuriums, Alcantarea imperialis, Alcantarea odorata, Tillandsias , Dracenas, Begonias and Aglaonema hybrids.

Mr. Bong Pineda executed this lovely landscape which used several flowering guzmanias, bromeliads, crotons, foxtail palms, ferns, flowering bougainvilleas and Tillandisa usneoides.

For those who wish to visit the exhibit area, There is a minimal entrance fees of Php 50.00 for the general public and Php 30.00 for students, senior citizens and pwd’s with valid ID’s

Exhibit areas is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and Flora Filipina International Exposition is until March 5, 2019.

Orchid fantasies and bonsai grandeur at the 72nd Philippine Orchid Society show

Orchid and bonsai lovers will be very happy to know that there are a lot to see at the ongoing Philippine Orchid Society show at the Hardin ng mga Bulaklak ( Flower Garden) within Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City.

The show is in partnership with the Quezon City government and with generous sponsors Del Monte- Philippines   , Villar Sipag Foundation

A colorful cultural dance presentation by the students of San Vicente Elementary School of Quezon City. This is a precursor for the upcoming Flora Filipina International Show in 2019.

The show started with a colorful lion dance past 4:00 pm last March 8 with hundreds of invited guests from different organizations, international bonsai masters from Republic of China, Mrs. Gloria Angara, Dr. Preciosa Soliven, Mr. Joselito ” Butch” Campos Jr., Dir. Mundita Lim, Ms. Camille Villar and members of the organization.

There are also about 130 bonsai trees and cacti in decorative ceramic pots on display- Mostly from the personal collection of Mr. Manuel and Susan Lee and the late Modesto Manglicmot Jr. There were about 2 dozen suiseiki ( art of stone appreciation and collecting ) too.

Try to visit about 70 commercial stalls from different parts of the country selling different items from plastic pots, bonsai, native orchids, fertilizers, seeds, cacti , succulents , fruit trees , ornamental plants, ferns and even pitcher plants.

Manila Bulletin is among the news print media partner of the show.

There are daily lectures, workshops and seminars which starts at 2:00 pm. There is a minimal entrance fees of Php 30 for general public and Php 20 for senior citizens and students with valid Id’s. The show is until March 19, 2018.

Miss Evangeline ” Vangie” Go is another big winner at the container or dish garden landscape competition.

Her winning dish garden landscape exhibit showcases different tillandsia , bromeliads , ferns.

Second Place -Ms. Delia Pionela showcased miniature landscape houses with small ornamental plants,Cryptanthus or Earth stars  which accompanied by accessories like miniature dwarfs and stones.  Third Place goes to Rommel Perez
