Ka Popoy’s Bakery: Home of Famous Kalabasha Rolls and Pan de Popoy

Ka Popoy’s Bakery recently opened their store for business within the heart of Villa Florencia Subdivision in Barangay Talipapa, Novaliches in Quezon City.

The bakery name was derived from Ka Popoy, The homegrown bakery attracts several customers, Some are from as far as University of the Philippines , Diliman, Marikina, Novaliches, North Caloocan and even residents of Valenzuela City.

The logo’s color is quite modern and catchy . It had a simple black and orange background. Orange being the color of kalabasa or squash.

Ka Popoy’s Bakery logo had some similarities with Ka Tunying Coffee and Bakeshop, The sales clerk told me that the proprietor was one of the business partner of Mr. Anthony Taberna.

They had a soft opening held last January 18, 2021, Among the instant favorites were their Spanish bread,kalabasha rolls ( squash rolls) , banana cake, pan de popoy, pianono rolls, ensyamada, monggo rolls, monggo pan de sal, ham and cheese stuffed bread, cheese bread, brownies, crinkles, caramel bars among others.

Aside from pastries, They also have sandwich spread, canned goods,peanut butter, coffee, bottled water for sale.

Kalabasha rolls have vitamins A, B6, and C, folate, magnesium,riboflavin, phosphorus, and potassium which is healthy and goof for one’s health.

Their pianono rolls is also good but not baked in pugon style unlike those in Concepcion Bakery in Malabon.

One can also pre- order cakes or other pastries. We tried their banana bread for Php 75, pan de popy for Php 29 per pack and their well -loved kalabasha roll for just Php 39.00.

We also have tried their ensaymada, pianono rolls and caramel bars a couple of weeks ago.

Finger Licking Good at Korips Fried Chicken in Ilang-Ilang Street, San Pedro IX Subdivision

Have you ever tried home-made and crispy fried chicken within your neighborhood? A couple of months ago, A restaurateur and friend Sir Alex of Amritsari Biryani told me that there is a neighborhood fried chicken within San Pedro IX subdivision that is usually sold out.

He told me that the fried chicken had a small stall along one of the major street within their area. It number 6 along Ilang-Ilang street.

Korips Fried Chicken

Korips Fried Chicken was the combination of Korean and Filipino name, The recipe and batter mixture is also a combination of Korean and Filipino spices, ingredients and batter mixture. The recipe was the original concept idea of husband and wife tandem of Mr. Charles and Mrs. Glyz Villafor.

They start selling their crispy fried chicken at past 4:30 pm and until past 8:00 pm or until supplies last. Some of the neighbors would order 30 to 50 fried chickens when there are family occasion or just simple viand ( ulam ) for the night.

The gravy sauce is not thick compared to Jollibee, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Mc Donalds. It is light and not salty which complements the fried chicken well. The batter mixture is light and the deep fried to perfection.

For those living within San Pedro IX subdivision within Barangay Bagbag, Novaliches, Quezon City– one must try their fried chicken. They offer FREE delivery within San Pedro IX subdivision, Grand Monaco Villas, Kasiyahan Townhomes for just a minimum order of 6 fried chicken. While those living within Kingspoint Subdivision, El Pueblo One condominium or even Goodwill Homes 1 in Barangay San Bartolome, One must order at least 10 fried chicken in order to avail of the FREE delivery services.

However in other parts of Novaliches and Metro Manila, there is a minimum number of purchase and small amount of delivery fees.

Price is quite reasonable and they also have fried chicken skin, chicken nuggets too. For bulk orders, there they can delivery within Metro Manila with starting order of 30 pieces of fried chicken. Some of their fried chicken made its way to Pasig, Pampanga and even in Fairview.

The price range is just Php 30 per Korips fried chicken and Php 20 for their crispy chicken skin.

Roxsie’s Sinugba is one of food stalls which is located within Katipunan Avenue sometimes called SB road which starts from Lukaria street in Barangay Talipapa, Kingspoint Subdivision within Barangay Bagbag, Goodwill Homes 1, California Village Subdivision , Sierra Vista and intersecting General Luis street in Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon.

Sinugba was derived from the Cebuano word in which “any type of food that is cooked or grilled over charcoal “. Grilled food is quite popular along the stretch of the community . The 6 or 7 kilometers long stretch of SB Diversion Road provides an alternative short cut route within Novaliches to Northern part of Caloocan, parts of Valenzuela and Fairview.

Roxsie’s Sinugba have a lot of different grilled dishes ranging from their all time favorite tuna belly, rellenong bangus, grilled pork liempo, bangus lumpia (lumpiang bangus/ milk fish spring roll), special laing, rellenong pusit, special grilled liempo, bangus sisig among others. Their stall used be the location of another well-known grilled food ( Pixie’s Sinugba) which existed for many years. But the current name, Roxsie’s Sinugba had been there since 2019 or about 2 years.

Bangus lumpia or lumpiang bangus / milk fish rolls is one of the best sellers, the meat inside the spring roll wrapper is from milk fish flakes and a little bit sweet. A sweet chili sauce or banana ketchup will balance the flavor.

One of the reason “why’ we keep on coming back and buying their sinugba are the flavor is not salty and are mildly flavored.

A big chunk of their customers lived within the community like California Village Subdivision, Goodwill Homes 1 within Barangay San Bartolome, Sierra Vista,Torres Village and even as far as General Luis, Barangay Caybiga, Deparo in Caloocan.

They are in business for about 7 years and still counting, There are three known branch of Rosie’s Sinugba, The biggest and their commissary is located in Don Antonio along Holy Spirit Drive ( near Ever Mall) and Tandang Sora corner Mindanao Avenue, Quezon City.

According to one of the staff, There use to be 3 more stalls but had to close down due to the decreasing sales and pandemic lock down.

Kingspoint Community Pantry Goes Full Blast

Kingspoint Community Pantry goes full blast last April 23 Friday with hundreds of residents from nearby areas lined-up as early as 6:00am and queue for at least 2 hours.

I happened to pass by the Yarda Food Hub late April 22 ( Thursday ) around past 5:00pm and saw the set-up of the community pantry.

Mr. Greg Mota a resident of Goodwill Homes 1 and Engineer Aldrin Godwin Pangan – who spearheaded the community pantry- both are also active in Christ the King of the Universe parish ( photo taken last April 23 Friday)

Kingspoint Subdivision Community Pantry is the concerted efforts of brainchild of the Christ the King of the Universe Parish, Engineer Aldrin Godwin Pangan, Mr. Greg Mota and the dynamic volunteers of the community. The community also encompasses nearby areas such as El Pueblo One condominium, Oro, Dupax, Daniac Court, Kasiyahan Townhomes, San Pedro IX, Maloles compound, Grand Monaco Villas, Kingsville and Goodwill Homes 2 within the territorial jurisdiction of Barangay Bagbag. While Goodwill Homes 1, California Village, Dona Faustina Subdivision are within the territorial jurisdiction of Barangay San Bartolome in Novaliches, Quezon City.

The community pantry is located in front of Yarda Food Hub which is located in block 37, lot 10 along Katipunan Avenue, Kingspoint Subdivision , Barangay Bagbag, Novaliches. The food hub just serves as a temporary community pantry since its temporary closure last year. They have to ask permission from the owner of the food hub and coordinated with Barangay Bagbag and the local government unit of Quezon City .

They also have to follow the guidelines set by the IATF because Metro Manila is still under Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ)and curfew hours is between 8:00 pm to 5:00 am. So residents must try to follow these simple guidelines and must follow simple protocols like practicing social distancing, wearing of face mask, face shield.

There are 550 individual residents who patiently queue in line during the first day, 310 in April 24 Saturday, about 400 in April 25 Sunday. The line is quite long and reach about a kilometer long ending in Touch of Class car wash and food hub nearby.

Community Pantries in Metro Manila

Community pantry is long established community effort in many countries. There are relief efforts which are conducted by NGO groups and private organizations during the time of calamities such as flood, typhoon, fire and earthquakes. Somehow the scope was limited.

There are over 135 community pantry in Quezon City and over 440 community pantries that have sprung -up in many areas of the country.

Ta Ramen Na recently opened their second branch within Kingspoint subdivision, Novaliches in Quezon City last March 27, 2021. Just in front of Touch of Class car wash and food hub. Some of the proprietors live within the area, Hence, they thought of opening a ramen stall within the community.

The operation time is from past 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm since it is still modified enhance community quarantine (MECQ) in the national capital region and surrounding provinces. But according to the proprietors, They can extend the operations hours once the quarantine protocols and IATF guidelines have relax.

They opened their first stall few months ago located in 2263 Topacio street, San Andres Bukid and became an instant hit among customers and residents of San Andres Bukid, Manila.

The stall is also within walking distance from El Pueblo One condominium, Maloles compound, San Pedro IX subdivision, Kasiyahan Village, Grand Monaco Villas, Dupax compound and Kingspoint subdivision within Barangay Bagbag.

The stall is just between 2 to 3 kilometers from Goodwill Homes1 ,California Subdivision, Doña Faustina Subdivision within Barangay San Bartolome and Sierra Vista and Toress Village within Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon, Novaliches, Quezon City.

The style is more of street ramen style. It takes several hours for their broth to be made, hence incorporating the savory taste and umami flavors.

We ordered their Tonkotsu for just Php 99.00 is affordable and the broth elevates the fine taste of their ramen.

They also have Miso Ramen for just Php 109.00, Black Garlic Ramen for just Php 109.00, Tatanmen for Php 199.00, Chicken Butter Ramen for Php 149.00, Red Bomba Ramen for those who loves spicy ramen for just Php 199 and Gyoza for Php 125 ( 6 pieces). additional topping would cost Php 50 chasu pork, black fungus for Php 20, salted seaweed strips Php 20.00 , Hard Boiled Tamago for Php 20 and extra noodles for Php 40.00.

Among the well-known Filipino celebrities which have eaten at their ramen stall includes comedienne Pooh, freestyle rapper Mr. Mike Kosa and among others.

They also opened their 3rd ramen stall located in Door 8, Console 3 Barangay Fatima Elvinda, San Pedro City within Laguna province just last April 9, 2021 and the ramen stall is open for franchise to those who are interested.

We cannot wait to eat their other ramen noodles and gyoza!
