Daily Schedule of Lectures and Talks at Flora Filipina 2019

There will be daily lectures and talks from experts in the field of orchids, plants, cacti, ferns, flower arrangements and fertilization at the Flora Filipina 2019.

The event was organized by Philippine Orchid Society Inc. in partnership with Quezon City government, Quezon City Memorial Administration, Department of Agriculture, Department of Tourism and with media partner Manila Bulletin.

The daily lecture/ talk will start from February 27 to March 5, 2019. This is to pave way for the 3- day conference that the society is hosting.

Venue of the talks/ lecture will at the pavilion area in Hardin ng mga Bulaklak ( Flower Garden) within Quezon Memorial Circle facing East Avenue entrance.

Since the venue of the lecture and seminar is inside the exhibit area- There is a minimal entrance fees of Php 50 general public and Php 30 for students, senior citizens and people with disabilities with valid Id’s ( as mandated by law).

 

 

Hortikultura Extravaganza 2015 Daily Lectures and Workshop

Philippine Horticultural Society Incorporated together with Quezon City government , Quezon Memorial Circle administration, Del Monte, Philippines, Department of Tourism, Department of Agriculture , San Miguel Corporation, The Turf Company , Texas Eagle, AANI group, Toro group , Villar Foundation and various garden clubs and plant organization in different parts of teh country  presented the much awaited plant show in 2015 .

64th Annual Orchid and Garden Show

The 64th annual Orchid and Garden show kicked off  last February 25, 2010 within the Manila Seedling Bank Foundation compound while the landscaped exhibits ,   orchid  and plant competitions  were held at the nearby Greenhouse #2 site of major plant and horticultural exhibits.

After several unconfirmed venue  sites like those at the  Sunken garden within the  Quezon City Hall grounds,  Quezon Memorial Circle  in Quezon City – Ugarte fields  , Makati Park , Makati Cityhall  grounds , The orchid society board decided on the last minute to move the venue of the show back  to Quezon City.

This marked the return of the Philippine Orchid Society annual show at the Manila Seedling Bank compound after almost 14 years ! The show theme  focus on climate change,  Hence the annual theme , “Protecting our Orchid Species from Climate Change.”

This event is expected  to enhance interest in the orchid culture.  Thus, it has been the tradition of the Society provide awareness, appreciation and knowledge in the field of orchidology, and with this inspire Filipinos to value and conserve Philippine orchid species and create improved hybrids. There are about 50 commercial ” flea market style ” stalls selling various ornamental plants, orchids, pots, seeds.

Guests of honor included Umagang Kay Ganda host Ms. Bernadette Sembrano- Aguinaldo , Manila Seedling Bank Foundation – General Manager  Mr. Lucito  Bertol and Dr. Helen Valmayor of UPLB  an authority on Philippine orchids.

In addition, the Society aims to be at the forefront in raising the level of awareness and appreciation of its members and orchid enthusiasts alike, in the rich and diverse Philippines orchid flora.

The orchid show is also being held to mark the beginning of the blooming season of the Phalaenopsis (butterfly orchids) and  Dendrobium species such as Dendrobium anosmum or Sanggumay .

Malvarosa Orchid – Best Orchid landscape exhibit

Big winner in the”  Best  Orchid Landscape exhibit ”  category is Malvarosa Orchids and ” Best Orchid in  Show ” was  a big specimen -sized  orchid known as  Grammatophyllum multiflorum.

Among the newly released orchid hybrid was a yellow colored BLC variety  an orchid named after the former Department of Agriculture Secretary Mr. Arthur Yap .

Best ornamental landscape exhibit winner

Winner for “Best Ornamental Landscape exhibit” went to Mr. Vic de Rona a bonsai  plant collector with a store within the Manila Seedling Bank compound.

There was also a landscape exhibit with a lot of yellow flowering orchids , plants and yellow ribbons  on display purposely celebrating the 24th anniversary of the EDSA People Power .

2nd Flora Filipina Horticultural Expo 2009

Mabuhay and Warm Greetings in the World of Plants!
The Philippine Orchid Society, together with the country’s major horticultural organizations  hosted  the 2nd Flora Filipina International Expo 2009 at Quezon City Hall grounds (Lagoon area) from February 6 to 16, 2009. The theme of the of this year’s event was “Discovering the Best and Rarest Philippine Flora”.

The show partners were the Department of Tourism, Department of Agriculture, Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry , and Natural Resources Research and Development – DOST, Department of Education Culture and Sports , CHED, National Commission for Culture and the Arts , Quezon City government , City Tourism Authority of Quezon City , Quezon Memorial Circle and various horticultural societies across the country.

Xavier school – one of the campus visited as part of the promotion of the event.

Department of Education Culture and Sports had also endorse the project with memorandum circular 242 series of 2008 issued on October 21, 2008 memorandum circular 242 series 2008.

Part of the publicity and promotion for the show was to invite schools and notable universities to come to the show and as part of the program , Lectures were given for free about basic  orchid and plant care during the campus tour where a lively Q and A portion was delivered .  The orchids and posters were given as part of the promotion during the Flora Filipina Expo. As part of the exchange deals,  some of the universities featured the show in their on-line websites, communities and groups.

Schools and various universities across the country had conducted a field trip into the site . Noticeable universities which had a large contingent were Pamantasan ng Lunsod ng Maynila, University of Makati, University of the Philippines, Far Eastern University , National University,  La Salle- Gregorio Araneta University , University of Santo Tomas , Rizal Technological University, Xavier High School , De La Salle, Ateneo de Manila University , Arellano University , University of the East , Colegio de San Lorenzo , Bicol University , Mapua Institute of Technology, Lyceum of the Philippines , Pamantasan ng Pasig , University of the Philippines – Diliman and Laguna among others…

Television live questing was also part of the elaborate publicity of the show like UNTV channel 37 ( program Kay Kuya  and Pundahan ) aired February 2 and 3, 2009. various radio programs also featured the show.

Special mention are Hon. Anna Maria ” Bambi ” Harper ( Intramuros Administration head),   Dr. Jaime An Lim dean  of Institute of Arts and Sciences  , Dr. Juliet Sarabia – head Biology Department-Far Eastern University ( Nicanor Reyes)  Dr. Lorna Basug – University of the East -Recto  and Head of Biology division of Pamantasan ng Lunsod ng Maynila whom the author personally met during the show.

The main objectives of the event is to unite and uplift the ornamental plant industry and showcase what is new, encourage research and production and to disseminate new horticultural technologies and information.
The show is  to be one of Southeast Asia’s biggest gardening and plant event, which envisions to gather under one single international gardening event  horticulturists, flower and plant connoisseurs, collectors or rare plants, traders, suppliers, landscapers, architects,  manufacturers  and traders of  gardening tools, fertilizers, pesticides, garden equipment, environmental government and non-government organizations, private and government universities and colleges, government departments and agencies, foreign embassies, including local and foreign visitors. There will be 120 commercial booths and 60 exhibits featuring an assortment of plants including new hybrids and species..

The Flora Filipina had a 2-day Scientific Conference on Philippine Plants from February 6 to 7, 2009 at the Bureau of Soils, Visayas Avenue. corner Elliptical Road, Diliman, Quezon City.  which,  there was an organized tour to various plant nurseries and tourist destination in the Laguna, Cavite, Makati , Quezon  and Batangas area.

Special mention to Dr. Benito C. Tan a Filipino Bryophytes ( moss ) expert now based in Singapore , He is also a graduate of FEU summa cum laude and University of the Philippines. who was one of the speaker at the recent 2-day conference.

Opening ceremonies were held on February 5, 2009 with Las Piñas Representative Cynthia Villar, Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte, Jr., Meralco Chairman Manolo Lopez, and Department of Tourism Undersecretary Cynthia Carreon as guests of honor and dozens of foreign dignitaries and ambassador wives in attendance.

Special  on the spot painting event was organized last February 7, 2009 and participated by public high school students from at least 20 schools around Quezon City . The participants were given a token Php 500.00 by CITAOand cash prizes , ribbons and glass trophies by the Philippine Orchid Society .

Ramon Magsaysay High School students  in Cubao won 2 first prize category. landscape and individual painting category. Notable foreign and local judges were invited.

Earth Keepers Organic Farm & Restaurant

Earth Keepers Garden and Restaurant is located on Kilometer 101, Brgy Talisay in Tiaong , Quezon

Last March 29, 2008, I was very excited to visit the restaurant and organic farm. The jam packed 50 seater tourist bus hired by the Philippine Orchid Society went to this place.   The crowd was eager to see this wonderful place which promotes healthy lifestyles and living. Some parts of the property had small relaxation area which could be instantly be converted into a spa or an informal meeting place.

Pesticides, which is concentrated on the vegetables and foods that we usually buy from the market, had traces or laced  harmful chemicals .

A lot of the people in this world is already facing with serious dilemma.

According to Ms. Teresa Saniano or simply Ms. Tere  the owner of the demo farm said that urea, which is the primary source of fertilizer in farms is already increasing in price, the main component of which is made from petroleum based, the soaring world market of petroleum had caused increase in the prices of these fertilizer which also increases the farm gate prices of these foods.

We all know what is happening all over the world in the quest to have higher yield in food production.

Ms. Tere had warmly welcomed the group and had a short power point presentation in which her advocacy group want to spread not only within the province of Quezon But also all over the country.

Her demo farm is very productive; She had organically grown vegetables, papaya fruits, organic rice, free-range chickens is fed naturally with organically grown vegetables and termites which is high in protein unlike the usual poultry grown chicken that  had to be fed with feeds .

She even had formulated an organic feeds for the pigs which are grown in the farm, she had also vermicomposing which used African night crawlers and their vermin –waste is transformed vermiculite  into organic fertilizers and organic spray.

Even kitchen waste such as fish gills, fish innards and leftover bones are also transformed into organic fertilizers.

The fish gills and innards is then prepared with a ratio of 1kilo fish gills and innards to 1 kilo of molasses then fermented for 20 days, after which the organic waste is then filtered into  a loin cloth then the fish emulsion is already ready substitute for a high nitrogen based organic foliar fertilizer . The fertilizer is then mixed with 155 grams of ordinary sardine can.

While enjoying the sumptuous  organic buffet lunch  Congressman Prospero Alcala dropped by and joined the group. He  is happy that the group had toured his district and ecstatically  shared some of his insights on  agriculture and organic farming.  he also gladly posed for a souvenir shot with the group .

His involvement in agriculture is deepened and was convinced there is a big market for their crops. However, to be competitive they should get into organic farming.

According to Mr. Alcala ,  If  the farmers, if motivated, could indeed maximize their produce. They were given the seeds and necessary farm inputs—from fertilizers to pesticides, and after their produce were sold in the market, they managed to pay for the inputs provided them. The rest of the profit goes to them.

he recent surge in prices of farm inputs—nearly doubling the cost of fertilizers—deepened their conviction of the need to go organic.

She had also collection of native handicrafts, jars , ornamental plants, native orchids, water lilies  and wood work. Tere also accepts guided tour to her demo farm and restaurant but prior appointment must be made several weeks or even months  before coming to the farm.
