Hortikultura Extravaganza 2015 Opening Highlights

Philippine Horticulture Society Incorporated in partnership with Quezon City government , Quezon Memorial Circle management , Del Monte Philippines, UNAGROW a division of UNAHCO , Department of Agriculture , Department of Tourism , San Miguel Corporation, Texas Eagle , TORO, The Turf Company  different plant and horticultural organizations from all over the country. This year’s theme “ Yaman sa Paghahalaman ” that there can livelihood opportunities and how to generate money in the horticulture industry .

It was a full week of activities which included a 2-day Horticulture Congress held at the Bureau of Soils and Water Management on January 21 and 22, 2015 . 10 floral floats which were accompanied by street dancing , battle of the bands , landscape exhibition, competition , trade fairs and horticultural tours in Laguna and Cavite provinces.

Mr. Jonathan Badon is ” Best Global Pinoy ” awardee  . He serenaded the crowd in Italian, French love songs .

There were at least 200 trade fair participants from different parts of the country . One of the biggest agriculture group AANI ( Agri-Aqua Network Incorporated ) had proudly showcased different agriculture produce and technologies .

An eye catching landscape exhibit was the booth executed by East West Seed Company . The company is one of the largest producer of vegetable seeds, flowering annuals in the country.

 Binondo Fireworks and Firecrackers Lover  Association-president Mr. Ralph Soriano led the fireworks countdown .

The  mission is to  preserve and continue the use of fireworks in celebration, like fiesta, anniversary, funerals,weddings, debuts , inauguration, birthday,tourism,and other pertinent events Along with this giving safety precaution about using fireworks firecrackers is what the organization acquire to achieve

BEST FLOAT

Del Monte Philippines – 3rd Place

The float was inspired by pineapple which is the main product of the company. The company won Php 40,000 cash , Trophy

Villar Foundation- 2nd Place

The Villar Foundation float was inspired by water hyacinth plants which are made into various handicrafts, bags, organic fertilizers , slippers and even costumes.  The foundation won Php 60,000 cash and Trophy

King Louis -Grand Prize

King Louis Ornamental Flowers and Plants emerged as the overall champion of this year’s float parade. The company is a veteran in Baguio Panagbenga Flower Festival  . The company bagged home Php 100,000 Cash and Trophy.

Mr. Francis Gener conceptualize and executed the float.

The company had a stall within Quezon Memorial Circle and is one of the biggest potted flowering plant grower in the country.

The event was highlighted with the awarding of the Best in Show, Best in Landscape , Best Float . There will be twice a day lecture which will start on January 24 until February 2, 2015 .

* Note: Special Mention is the League of Orchid Conservationists of the Philippines and Best Fern Group in Thailand .

 The company is a domestic corporation duly registered with Securities and Exchange Commission (S.E.C) on October 25, 1983. It is primarily engaged in the production of various agricultural crops, to include various types of cut flowers, flowering pot plants, and flower bulbs.

At present, they are cultivating about 6 Hectares of covered are in various locations in La Trinidad, Benguet . Among the crops they are growing include: Spray Chrysanthemums, Roses, Liliums, Carnations, Gladiolas, Tulips, Hyacinths, Poinsettias, Potted Chrysanthemums, Kalanchoe, Impatients, and many more. Their main market includes Metro Manila and other key cities in the country. They are also into exports of Calla Lily Bulbs to Holland and Rooted Cutting to Japan.

This is one of the 5 agricultural companies which actively participated in the horticulture show . Their landscape display area is bigger than most of the exhibit.

East West Seed Company

East West Seed Company was established in the Philippines in 1982 by Simon Groot, a Dutch agriculturist who saw the need for seeds that were adapted to local conditions in Asia.

Different varieties of flowering plants like zinnias, impatients, petunia, vincas , marigold, vegetable crops adorn the exhibit display

At the time, the vegetable seed industry in Southeast Asia was little more than a seed trading system. No one was doing vegetable plant breeding, which involves years of trials, selection, crossing and investment.

Mr. Simon Groot saw the opportunity for locally-developed hybrid seeds, and all the remarkable characteristics they were known for, like higher yields, better disease tolerance, better shelf life and extended growing seasons.

After several months of preparation and promotion thru various forms of media – newspapers, television, radio, posters, internet and other social networking sites.

The ingress had started last August 27, 2013.  Setting the tents, shade nets for the commercial  and exhibit areas.   While the secretariat had to bring their office equipments to the pavilion area together with trophies, medals , ribbons and even speakers  !

Some commercial exhibitors came in early, The tried to bring their plants , gardening materials and their stocks. Some traders came from as far sa Visayas and Mindanao .

Mokara and Kagawara orchidMokara and Kagawara orchid hybrids neatly tied . Their inflorescence & flowers were wrapped in newspapers to avoid wilting and bruises .

These are Mokaras and Kagawaras orchids came from the  First Bloom Farm in Laguna.  Some of the orchids were already purchased by landscapers and orchid wholesalers in other provinces.

The mokaras and kagawaras intergeneric hybrids were an old time- favorite among orchid growers and floral arrangers .

Mokara Chark Kuan Mokara Chark Kuan – a tri-generic hybrid

Mokara Chark Kuan has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in the year 1976 by Lum Chin Orchids , an orchid nursery in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  The flowers of the Mokara Chark Kuan hybrids get a size of about 7-8 cm in diameter and are available in several colours, like pink, orange and red. a crossing between Aranda Christine (seed parent) and Ascocenda Cholburi (pollen parent)

Their long  stalks , colorful bright yellow/ pink/ orange/ red colored flowers and longer vase life makes them ideal  to grow them in the garden or in flower arrangements.

This is  to avoid the rush the following day. Their efforts were rewarded with people buying their plants  .   Orders were made by their customers.

Ms. Delia Pionela is one of the “early birds” at the commercial section. A regular participant during plant shows . She had a ready supply of various gardening materials like coco choir, loamy soil, pebbles, driftwood, mosses etc…

She also rents a commercial space within the Manila Seedling Bank Foundation where buyers can purchase plants and gardening materials.

Architect Vergara is an active member of different plant societies.   His Waling-waling ( Vanda sanderina / Euanthe sanderiana)  paintings were displayed at the lecture area .

Ms. Vangie Go– President of the Philippine Orchid Society personally supervises the landscaping job –  She is a perennial winner of various plant and landscaping  competition . Mrs. Go was recently invited to judge in Putrajaya, Indonesia and Kadayawan Festival in Davao City.

Some landscape exhibitor and park visitors  bought  their plants and other materials from the early birds at the commercial section . While serious orchid and plant hobbyists entered their prized plant or orchid collection in the competition.

Mrs. Susan Lee is a bonsai connoisseur and a collector before joining the Philippine Orchid Society – She had 2 showcase landscape exhibit ( bonsai at orchid) .
