Paphiopedilum philippinense blooming in Cebu

Paphiopedilum philippinense is now in bloom at the farm of well-known landscaper and plant collector Mr. Jaime Chua from Cebu . This orchid species is the most common lady’s slipper orchid found in the country.

This is popularly known as lady’s slipper since the flower’s resembles slippers with tie.

This is an exciting multi-floral Paphiopedilum Subgenus Polyantha. It is found at sea level up to 500 to 700 meters primarily in the Philippines, hence the name, but also down through north eastern Borneo. The leaves are thick and uniformly green and can grow to be 20-50 cm long, mine measuring about 30 cm. The size of the flowers can vary widely and get as tall as 22 cm, mine is measuring 18 cm.

The orchid species are normally found in limestone cliffs and rocky slopes, hence some limestone pieces must be added when in cultivation.

Some of the other species are listed under CITES  and thus trade, collection and selling from the wild are restricted and even prohibited , unless they are grown in nurseries with CITES certification.

He first acquired his orchid more than 8 years , it started only 2 fans , now its more than 20 leaves. The orchid had 10 inflorescence with over 40 flowers by the time he posted in several orchid Fb group few days ago.

His farm is located at Maomawan , Cebu . It is 5 minutes before Ayala Heights Cebu.
