Flora Filipina 2015 : Exciting Cultural and Flower Display Opening Highlights

The Philippine Orchid Society in partnership with Quezon City government, Quezon Memorial Circle,Department of Tourism , Department of Agriculture , Del Monte-Philippines, KFC, Allied Botanical Corporation , Ramgo International,Philippine Bonsai Society and major garden clubs in different parts of the country opened the 4th Flora Filipina Exposition 2015 at the Hardin ng mga Bulaklak ( HB Flower Garden ) .

Ramgo International Seeds and Fertilizer Company is one of the key industry players . Aside from quality vegetable and flowering annuals seeds , fertilizers brands like Nutricote , Siam , Hormex . The company also sells quality plastic pots and gardening tools.

Allied Botanical Corporation or simply called ABC , They are the local distributor of Peter’s fertilizer , vegetable , ornamental flowering seeds producer .

sunflowers, lettuce , marigold, watermelon , herbs, vegetables,  bell peppers , tomatoes , zinnas, sorghum , celosia  among others were incorporated to be a part of the landscape .

A growing trend all over the world is to have edible plants such as vegetables, fruits , herbs and their companion flowering plants ( which drives away pests like insects or attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies  )

They are group together to add more color to the landscape and at the same time serves as food for the community. The predominant color is yellow – The arrival of the summer ( hot season in the Philippines ) is just around the corner.

Another simple yet reflective of Philippine culture is the ” Bahay Kubo ” or Nipa Hut . Typical scene that capture the rural setting with lots of ornamental flowering plants like bougainvillaeas, orchids , bromeliads  ,  bonsai on display.

Dr. Olivia Sanchez booth had a mix array of flowering orchids, gerberas , ferns, bromeliads, anthuriums, tillandsia and old railroad logs.

He was again awarded ” BEST Bonsai ” for Flora Filipina 2015

He is also quite lucky for choosing the same spot – Just like the mid-year show last year .

Philippine Bonsai Society , Inc. had  the tallest structure at the Flora Filipina  2015 event. The only downside of the structure is that people who wanted to take photos and see the bonsai on display will have to look -up.

There were about 170 to 200 people representing different garden clubs , organizations , international guests, foreign tourists, government officials during the opening day ceremonies.

Quezon City ‘s – Vice Mayor Maria Josefina Belmote-Alimurung personally welcomed everyone at the event.  Her office never missed any of the events hosted by plant organizations like the Philippine Orchid Society . I must agree with what she said.

Filipinized version of the famous Spanish Aragonese dance Jota. The name of the dance was derived from a final exclamation on the song that accompanies this dance.

The lyrics of this song is in Chabacano  Ermitense an extinct creole language spoken in Ermita, Malate and extends southwards to Pasay and Cavite area.  This dance is  performed to welcome a distinguished guests and the costume reflect strong Iberian, Mexican and Tropical Carribean colors  . Wooden castanets (  for male)  and tambourine ( for female) were used as part of the dance.

It is a traditional folk dance in which the performer holds full wine or water glasses  in each hand while performing balancing tricks.

Wine may be used to fill the glasses, but other liquids may be substituted. The arms are rotated over and under the shoulder in order to keep the palms facing up so as not to spill the liquid. It is performed by male and female dancers.

The origin of the dance is common in Pangasinan, Ilocos provinces , Central luzon provinces . The dancers were students from Commonwealth High School , Quezon City

Professor Juan T. Lim

Professor Juan T. Lim had one of the most massive exhibits during the show. He won the ” BEST Bonsai of the Show”  An Agoho tree which is over 20-years old .

In the 68th Mid-Year Orchid and Pet show within Hardin ng mga Bulaklak ( Flower Garden)  Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City . There are over a dozen landscape divided into 2 categories. Orchid and Ornamental Landscape category.

Constel Nature Garden

The landscape is a Japanese minimalist -inspired landscape exhibit of Constel’s Nature Garden located in Fairview , Quezon City . The landscape had several bonsai materials and one of the main exhibit is the tamarind bonsai with fruits !

Cactus and Bromeliads

Several varieties of sansevierias, bromeliads , tillandsias , agaves and succulents were showcased in this landscape exhibit  . The rocks , boulders are man-made and made of concrete with wires. It is a trend by some landscapers to use artificial stones , rock formation  in their landscape in order to save time and hauling costs.

Cactus and Succulents Society of the Philippines –THIRD PLACE

Executed and designed by Architect Bimbo Vergara, This landscape exhibit won 3rdplace in the ornamental landscape exhibit . The 1st , 2nd and 3rd place winners of cactus and succulent plants were also part of the exhibit

Bromeliads- SECOND PLACE

This exhibits showed the different types of bromeliads , alcantarea and ordinary flowering plants . The three alcantarea varieties won 1st , 2nd and 3rd place in the ornamental plant competition.

Orchid Landscape Exhibits

Malvarosa Orchids and Ornamental Farm is located in Malvar , Batangas . Dr. Hernando B. Perez is one of the few Filipinos who are breeders of cattleyas and other orchid varieties . He started growing and propagating orchids since in early 1970’s and started joining orchid and garden show since in early 1980’s .

The husband and wife team had 2 landscape entered in the competition. The first one was the bonsai exhibit and the second exhibit is the orchid landscape exhibit. The exhibit shows different types of orchid genera which includes Vandas, Mokara, Kagawaras, Oncidiums, Dendrobiums, Cattleyas, Vanda sanderiana

Using some old window panels , water feature and cement pots as additional accents . They also have a specimen Dendrochilum latisepalum var. macranthum

These  types of orchid species are very popular in Europe and in the United States of America as potted plants . They commonly referred too as “rice orchids” because of their flowers resemble the stalks of the rice . The flowers seems to attract small insects such as flies and mosquitoes because of their pungent smell. This specimen orchids with hundreds of flowers won 2nd place .

FIRST PLACE

The big winner of of the 68th Mid-Year orchid landscape exhibit competition goes to the tandem of Mrs. Corazon Purificacion and Mrs. Ana Ruth Purificacion -Conde . The landscape exhibit combines the colorful hybrids and native orchid species in the landscape .  At the upper right side of the exhibit ,  A specimen sized Dendrobium aphyllum was added . The bright green leaves of this deciduous orchid species add beauty to the overall landscape.

It was quite a bit overcast weather when the Philippine Orchid Society welcomed special guests of honor at the 68th Mid-Year Orchid and Garden Show. This year’s theme is ” The Great Orchid and Pet Show” .  A lot of the members of the society are also into pets and other hobbies . There is something new to be showcase, added a member of the organization which prefers to be anonymous.

 The guests were amazed to see the lovely waling-waling orchid landscape exhibit of Ms. Vangie Go. Her landscape exhibit won second place and her waling-waling won ” Best Waling-waling ” of the show.  She is one of the  well-known orchid growers and hobbyists in the country which specializes in Vanda sanderiana. Unlike other orchid species or hybrids . Waling-waling orchid species is a slow grower , from seed flask to community pots and to blooming size  . It can take between 5 to 8 years for the orchid to bloom. Vanda sanderiana was named after Henry Frederick Conrad Sander by taxonomist Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach .

There was a long list of special guests which included Mayor Herbert Bautista , Vice Mayor Maria Josefina ” Joy ” Belmonte , former First Lady Amelita ” Ming ” Ramos , ASEC  Agribusiness Marketing Assistance Service (AMAS) director Mr. Leandro ” Dax”  Gazmin ,  Chief Executive Officer and President- Del Monte -Philippines Mr. Joselito ”  Butch”  Campos, Senator  Cynthia A. Villar and Mr. Aldrin C. Cuña- Quezon City Administrator .

The event started past 4:00pm , When the ribbon cutting ceremony had started.  The special guests of honor were accompanied by QC Lancaster Band with members of the Philippine Orchid Society , invited guests and members of other plant societies.

There are over a dozen entry of the ikebana freestyle flower arrangement .What i noticed is that the participants are using living potted flowering orchids instead of the traditional cut-flowers . According to one of the participant in the competition, the flower shelf-life is longer compared to the cut-flowers.

Architect Bimbo Vergara

Among the top 5 winners is Architect Bimbo Vergara – He won 2 merit award ( BLUE ) First Place and ( RED ) Second Place . He used 2 live succulent plants , a Renanthera matutina a fire orchid species  which is found in Southeast Asian countries.   He completes the freestyle arrangement with a pedestal , tea cup and a standing Buddha to accentuate the design. Congratulations !

 

Ms. Dhory S. Alvendia

Ms. Dhory S. Alvendia is the President of the Floral Designers’ Circle of the Philippines . She had competed in numerous flower arrangement competitions locally and abroad.  Her entry is a pink unifoliate cattleya orchid .

Tillandsia xerographica

Tillandsia xerographica used to be rare both in cultivation and in the wild . But due to the help of different backyard hobbyists , farms and conservation efforts in their native Central and South America.  It is more abundant in cultivation .  The species is still threatened in the wild,  due to habitat destruction , over -collecting and insect infestation. The species is still listed in CITES .

Santan is called Ixora , The flowering shrub has many uses and health benefits that include the extracting the barks , roots and even flowers .  Boiled ixora roots and stems can cure diarrhea, nausea, cough, asthma, wounds , sores and sometimes santan tea is made from dried flowers. The compact flowers are also used into leis making .

Some bonsai enthusiasts use santan shrub as a material for making bonsai. Santan can be very compact and their young stems can be trained and shaped into topiaries and are planted near temples.

A short program commenced after the short tour of the exhibition site , awards were given to the winners and small token of appreciation were given to the guests of honor .  A light afternoon snacks was served by resident caterer Ms. Baby De Leon.

Professor Juan T. Lim is a bonsai and antique collector for several years, He is also active in many plants and animal clubs.  He had one of the most massive exhibit which delighted every visitors of the show.

Agoho bonsai or Casuarina equisetifolia

His prized winning Agoho bonsai or ( Casuarina equisetifolia) is at least 20 years -old . The tree species is found from Vietnam, Burma, Indo-China, French Polynesia , New Caledonia , Vanuatu , Australia and the Philippines

After the opening ceremonies, We were able to interviewed Mr. Lim and told him about his impressive bonsai .  He was very happy to win the award ” BEST Bonsai ” of the show . 

We all went to the commercial section and did some window shopping , Some extended their opening hours past 7:00pm to accommodate last minute buyers . I will be posting the list of the winners in landscaping competition , ikebana flower arrangement, ornamental plants, orchids and the BEST in SHOW Winners

The orchid show will run until September 8, 2014 . There will be a special 2-day PET SHOW -September 6 and 7 were different kinds of pets will be exhibited and there will be a pet competition and lecture scheduled on September 7, 2014 by Ms. Tiffany Cham.
