PSSM also cited the 10 Commandments of Sleep Hygiene , according to the World Association of Sleep Medicine or WASM , such as having fixed bedtime and waking up time, no daytime sleeping in excess of 45 minutes , avoiding excessive alcohol intake 4 hours before bedtime , avoiding intake of caffeine such as those coffee, tea , most sodas , including chocolate 6 hours before bedtime ; avoiding heavy , spicy , sweets 4 hours before bedtime , using comfortable bedding , finding comfortable temperature when sleeping inside a well-ventilated room, blocking out distracting noise and les light as possible and limiting the use of the bed to just sleeping.

This is why the PSSM reiterates the important elements of good sleep , which are ” Duration ” or the sufficiency of sleep to become well, rested and alert the following day , ” Continuity ” which means sleep time should be continuous and unbroken ; and ” Depth ” that sleep should be deep enough to be restorative or invigorating . Quality sleep , the PSM said , is very crucial to one’s good health and quality of life . It said that good quality and invigorating sleep is important for people’s day to day functioning , even in children for their overall wellness and development .

greeting cards
I bought some greeting cards – They come in handy especially when Christmas season is just few months from now.
postcards
Postcards are used to be priced between Php 5.00 per pack to Php 10 per pack during the last warehouse sale, NOW they are being sold at Php 20 per 2 packs or Php 10 each. There are postcards being sold at Php 25 per pack ( single design) But they are quite limited in terms of landmarks and scenery. Since the last warehouse sale, The postcards seems to have a dramatic increase in their prices .
Loom bands being sold for just Php 30 per pack, It used to be retailed at Php 170.00 per pack .
bargain books
controversial Mr. Donald Trump book on sale !
Here are Few Tips  :
1.Try to come as early as possible , It will give more leg time in choosing books , school supplies and other bargain stuffs.
2. Try to bring re-usable bag or eco-bags and hand sanitizer
3. Try to have a companion/ friend and bring candies or biscuits . Since the long lines can take  at least 1 hour just queuing going to the 4th floor and again in paying the cashier. Having a companion to look for the things , maybe chatting and meeting new friend will probably help. I met 2 UST architecture students whom i have a fine time chatting and looking for each others stuffs while falling -in line.
4. Try wear comfortable clothes as the entire floor is stuffy and packed with people looking for bargains and other stuffs, it is also possible to bring face mask , as it also tends to be dirty/ dusty  inside the warehouse.
5 . Bring as little as possible, preferably a small bag instead of a bulky knapsack, as book and bargain hunter aficionados are bound to buy several copies with the low price of both paperbacks and hardcovers.
6. Bulk buyers – NBS sales personnel distribute boxes for customers to place their finds, but it is better to prepare your own shopping bags for convenience in navigating the corridors.
7. Try to bring extra money and credit card as there are a lot of unforeseen items at the warehouse sale , it is also good for early Christmas shopping , I have seen Christmas decoration, Christmas wrappers and nice gift ideas like office organizers.  I have also met a couple of relatives while i was on my way out of the department store.

The Crops, Commodities and Technologies Section will showcase farmers, fisher folks and organizations providing safe and healthy food to Filipinos and present the value chain: production, processing and marketing. This will be a good start for the farmers to program their production to meet the requirements of institutional buyers especially from hospitals, restaurants, hotels and food caterers” she added.

Other than natural, organic and biodynamic farm produce which includes vegetables, fruits, rice, fisheries, live stock, native free ranged pastured poultry produce and products, Food Bowl Night Market will also feature food operators and wellness organizations, ornamental and herbs producers and the eco-friendly product manufacturers.

The Food Bowl will be launched at the ETON Centris Walk, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City starting March 18. It will open every Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 12mn. Philippine native plant garden inside PAWB

a landscaped portion executed by members of the society

Philippine Native Plant Conservation Society had a small site located near the Ninoy Aquino Park and Wildlife  Bureau – Visitors’ Center for a few weeks now. The society have been appointed as the execution arm of a proposed botanic garden prototype in Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife sponsored by the GTZ is a German funding agency and managed by PAWB.

They were scouring gardens in all over the country and around the metropolitan areas  to find suitable specimens to include in the botanic displays.  I visited the place in time for the January 16, 2010 monthly meeting at the  PNPCSI office in which Architect Andrew Patrick Gozon is said to conduct lecture with the topic ” Landscaping Using Philippine Native Trees”  .

As time flies quickly , Out of the dozen or so pre-registered participants for  the meeting,  only a handful  of people came!

group present during the meeting

The group composed of Mr. Patrick Gozon , Mr. Ronald Achacoso,  Anthony Arbias, Mr. George Yao, Mr. Leonard Co , Professor  Elena Ragrario and myself  toured the almost finished project of the society.

The collection of botanical plants ranges from orchids, hoyas, dishidias, aglaonemas, pitcher plants, ferns, cycads, native trees, aquatic plants among others.

Lumbang tree with heritage marker

The area had several identifies heritage trees by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources

pavilion within  the man-made lagoon

This park started as a portion of the Quezon Memorial National Park which was established in July 5, 1954. The original plan was an area of 197.8 hectares. However, in1969, the National Park was reduced to it present size of 64.58 hectares.

Park entrance from Quezon Avenue side

The park has a number of entrances. Its pedestrian entrance however is located along Quezon Avenue. The gate from this entrance opens to a wide, two-lane asphalted road,  Administration building stands at the end of the road. Another entrance is located on the North Avenue side.  The  parking space in this side of the park is bigger and  can accommodate buses .

The administration building with a salakot style green  colored- roof . The bust of the former Senator Benigno ” Ninoy” Aquino Jr. was installed during President Corazon C. Aquino term.

There is a flagpole in front of the administration building. Part of the building is used for conference and for exhibition purposes.

An aviary beside the main building housed several pairs of native Philippine horn bill birds, owls, eagles  and herons.

These aviaries are maintained with the donations and help of some of the country’s top  corporations , individuals and other NGO groups.

Bagawak (Clerodendrum quadriloculare)

Some people also call it Bunga de Febrero, due to the fact that it flowers fully in about  January to February. This native flowering shrub of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, has one of the most impressive flower displays among our native flora. Bagawak  thick green leaves and reddish undersides, makes the plant  very attractive addition to any garden.

The problem is bagawaks are still not popular as a garden plant. Most of the plants are seldom seen  in collection, mostly in posh subdivisions. If you would want to see the spectacular magic burst  of flowers the ideal places are within Manila Seedling Bank  Foundation,  some in the botanical garden , in Antipolo areas and in UPLB areas.

According to some horticulturist,  This plant blooms better in a higher elevations like those in Antipolo, Silang, Laguna , Lipa , Tagaytay areas.
