Plantdemic and the plant craze among plantiquarians, plantitos, plantitas, halamoms, batang halaman will extend from 2021 and early part of 2022.

Some plant farm owners and industry experts believes that there will be some price adjustments for some of the well loved plants that people fancy for most part of 2020.

Cymbidium Hybrids

Orchids – Dendrobium hybrids, Vanda hybrids, Cattleya hybrids and allies,Oncidium ( dancing ladies or dancing dolls) hybrids, Cymbidium hybrids, Phalenopsis hybrids, Catasetum hybrids, Vanilla orchid, and native orchid species will still be popular among backyard hobbyists, amateur collector and hospitality industry will need a lot of these flowering plants.

Flowering orchids like Dendrobium hybids, Phalenopsis hybrids, Mokara, Cymbidium hybrids are in much demand as their bloom can last between two weeks to at least a month (with proper care and maintenance).

Growing orchids is still popular hobby and there are several FB group with tens of thousand of member, forum sites and other social media sites which caters to the proliferation of this hobby and how to grow these plants. There are a lot of misconception, myths and fantasy on orchids that there are people who still regard growing them as therapeutic, business, lucky, challenge or just for aesthetic purposes.

Native orchids are also popular. However, there are some issues that one must always take into consideration. Getting your native orchids in the wild poses threat to the survival of many of these plants. Be sure that the orchids are from reputable orchid dealer, farm or had been cultivated for a long time by the grower.

Old cultivar varieties like Dendrobium Jacquelyn Thomas which was developed way back in the 1970’s, Dendrobium University of Hawaii, Dendrobium Caesar, Dendrobium bigibbum hybrids are slowly making a come back in the local market. These old hybrid cultivar varieties are quite hardy in the long rainy climate and their flowers are long lasting.

Some native orchids will not survive the hot climatic conditions of the lowlands, While there are some endangered orchids still traded online. Try to read books, magazines, literature and online sites which can give accurate information.

Native orchids and fern allies

For long time collectors and hobbyists would refer any jungle collected plants or orchids as Gubatum/ Gubatum Harbatum/ Hablotii.

There is also a surge in people interested in native orchid species, Aerides quinquivulnera, Dendrobium anosmum, Dendrobium aphyllum, Vanda sanderiana, Vanda lamellata, jewel orchid, terrestrial orchid.

Proof to the pudding is that some well known and established orchid farms located in Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna,Davao,Cebu, Quezon and Cagayan de Oro are expanding.

What to look for ? miniature orchids, jewel orchids, ground orchids, old cultivar, crosses, varieties and new orchid hybrids are in trend.

Big Winners at the 73rd Mid-Year Philippine Orchid Festival

Big winners at the individual orchid competition at the 73rd Mid-Year Orchid Festival show by the Philippine Orchid Society at the Flower Garden ( Hardin ng mga Bulaklak) within Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City.

Most of the Vanda sanderiana orchids at the orchid exhibit were from Dr. Olivia Sanchez, Mrs. Vangie Go and Purificacion Orchids.

The big winners were the orchids competition were exhibited by Dr. Olivia Sanchez, Purificacion orchids, Mr. Manuel and Susan Lee.

Aside from getting blue ribbon, glass trophy, ceramic vases. Some of the winners also got cash incentives.

Honorable Josefina “Joy” Belmonte -Alimurung together with Honorable Candy Medina- Atienza (councilor 6th district), Assistant administrator Attorney Lord, Engineer Zaldy Dela Rosa, Quezon Memorial Circle administration staff, affiliated plant societies, invited guests, media, social media bloggers and Philippine Orchid Society members, were treated to a grand ribbon cutting, a tour of the exhibit area and opening of the 73rd mid- year orchid and festival 2019.

Opening was held late afternoon past 4:00 pm within Hardin ng Bulaklak ( HB/ Garden of Joy/ Flower Garden) the exhibits highlighted the blooming of several varieties of waling-waling  or Vanda/ Euanthe sanderiana which is the highlight of the festival.

It is good that there were some blooming Waling-waling during this time of the year since rainy season started a little bit late.

It is also good that table judging for flowering orchids were introduce during this show. This will enable orchid hobbyists and the general public to appreciate the orchid competition winners up close. Most international orchid shows normally present their orchids that way.

The mayor also delighted the crowd with her three good news which were delivered during her speech after the ribbon cutting ceremonies held within Quezon City Memorial Circle in Quezon City.

Different Color Variation of Waling-Waling at Mr. Jaime Chua’s Farm

Waling-waling is in blooming season this time of the year. Its flowering season usually at the start of the rainy season. July , August up to late September are the  blooming season for this orchid species. Some population can bloom by late October or February in higher elevations are also reported in Davao and Cotabato provinces. Orchid fanciers and collectors would always look for outstanding colors, variations, proliferousness.

Scientific Name

Vanda sanderiana or Euanthe sanderiana  better known as the Waling-Waling to common people.

This orchid species was named after Henry Frederick Conrad Sander a noted orchidologist. The orchid is considered to be the “Queen of Philippine flowers” and is worshiped as a goddess by the indigenous Bagobo and Manobo tribes. Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach originally described named this orchid Vanda sanderiana in 1882.

Legendary Goddess

It has two several forms pink and white, also referred to as alba. It was discovered around August 1880 . The natives called the legendary air-plant waring-waring which Roebelin was told, meant “beautiful goddess.” The Diangans -Bagobo who lived around the foothills o the big mountain had another name for it: Diwatang Madayaw. Literally translated, it meants ” Beautiful lady from heaven.”

This particular orchid species is the highlight of the annual Kadayawan Festival, the upcoming Negros Horticultural Society Show Augsut 28 to September 5, 2017 and the Philippine Orchid Society forthcoming show from September 2 to 16, 2017 at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

Mr. Jaime Chua is a plant and orchid collectors for many years and he is also a landscaper, plant judge.

He had about 500 mature Waling-Waling orchids mounted growing on palm tree trunks and on trunks of Anonang trees or scientifically called Cordia dichotoma . His farm boasts of different color variations and sizes.

He had a farm located at Busay , Cebu province. Busay is about 304.01 meters or 997.42 feet elevation , which is still considered as lowland. But the topography and his cultural techniques, fertilization, climate are some of the reasons of his success in growing this particular orchid.

This orchid species does not like a lot of wind movement unlike the typical Vanda species.

Mr. Jaime Chua has been collecting outstanding Waling-Waling specimen orchid which he uses in his breeding program. He had several Waling-Waling crosses which he multiplies through tissue culture. He also breeds other Philippine orchid species.

The latest has 9 flower spikes that were still unopened as of August 19, 2017. Aside from the common form and color of Waling-Waling, Jaime has Waling-Waling with dark pink petals, petals with a tinge of orange, albata and alba.

The Philippine Orchid Society which was founded in 1946 also uses the orchid in the logo .

PHLPost Releases New Orchid on Stamps

Philippine Postal Corporation released a new set of stamps which features 2 Philippine orchid hybrids and 2 hybrids on its souvenir sheet and 1 endemic Philippine orchid on the common Php 12.00 stamp , Trichoglottis atropurpurea on souvenir sheet – souvenir sheet cost Php 48.00 plus 12% VAT . = Php 53.76 

Orchids is quite popular subject in local philately and there is high demand for stamp collectors , since these orchids species and hybrids cannot be easily grown .

The 2 Philippine orchid species includes Trichoglottis atropurpurea Reichb.f. 1877 which is endemic to the country and Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi Blume & Rchb.f. 1860 which is also found in other Asian countries.

Waling -waling also known as Euanthe sanderiana  or Vanda sanderiana Rchb.f 1882 .  Dendrobium sanderae variety luzonicum is found endemic to Central and Northern Luzon at an altitude of 1,000 meters to over 1,700 meters in elevation.

The two other orchid are hybrids Phalaenopsis Ching Hua and Rhyncholaeliacattelya Hsingying Rouge
